'-- THE M ORN1NG STAR; W!f,M INGTON, N, C. THURSDAY, AUGUST 12, 1915. SEVEN FINANCIAL AND COTTON RECOVERED LOSSES aofe Firm at Advance 6t .18 to 20 points Buying Not Active But Recent Sellers Appeared to Be Covering. Ke" York, Aug. 11. -Cotton today more than recovered yesterday's losses ami closed cflrm at a net advance of 15 to 20 points. Trading Wis not active but recent sellers appeared 16 be cbver ing on less favorabfe weather of crop new?. There evidently was little cotton of fering on the advance which carried peeemt'er to within five points of last peek's best level. The market opened steady, uftchang e(j to an advance of four points in response to relatively steady cables' and sold about 5 to 6 points net high er during the first few minutes. Most of the demand seemed to be in the way. of covering by local shorts, and. the advance attracted some scattering pres sure from operators w who probably thought- the demand soon would- be satisfied and that the market prdbably would ease off should the detailed weather report for the Houston 'dis trict show as much rain as indicated by yesterday's private reports. The Western belt forecast for generally clear weather held selling in cheftk, however, and when the Texas details were published they proved a disap pointment for bears. The advance thus started was stim ulated by the bullish showing of the weekly weaier report and the market reached the best point of the day in the late trading, closing only a point or two off from the top under realising. Bulls contended that damage done through shedding and premature opening of bolls could not be repaired, and favorable features in the daily weather reports were overbalanced by the unfavorable weekly review from the Weather Bureau. First prices were at the advance and in early trading the market stood nve points up. Toward noon strongest months were 15 points up. There was much short covering in the afternoon and the pain was widened to 15 to 17 points. The close was 15 to 16 up. C, Aug. 11. The Raleigh division of ,the United States Depart ment" of Agriculture Weather Bureau today Issues the following summary of weather and crop conditions through out the State for the past week: "The week was favorable and all crops show considerable improvement, except over small areas where more moisture' is needed. Rain during the first of the week was heavy to exces sive at many places, and generally suf ficient to relieve the droughty , condi tions. High winds on the 3rd caused slight damage to corn. Curing of to bacco has become general, with a fair to good crop. Cotton is taking on more fruit and the outlook is promis ing, but will be about two weeks late." STOCK TRADING LESS ACTIVE Broad and Strong Influences, However, Were Evident Railway Shares Advanced in Early Dealings. New York, Aug. 11. The same forces which influenced yesterday's broad and strong stock market again were in evidence today, although trading was somewhat less active and realising sales 'were directive. Leading railway Shares were lifted to higher prices in early , dealings, the . movement Coincid ing with announcement that the Inter state Cdmme'rce Commission had grant ed .a. general freight advance to the Western roads. Although these advices were disappointingly small, they serv ed for a time to stimulate speculative demand to a' greater dgree. Every division Of the railway list shared in the rise, particularly Cana dian Pacific and allied issues, which gained from 2 to over 5 points. The Ha? riman and Hill issues added . 1 to 2 points to yesteTday's best quotations and Southern and Southwestern issues, as well as trunk lines and unclassified stocks, made similar improvement. Later the weight Of European selling Combined with heavy local realizing caused material reductions. In the final hour some leaders were a point or two under yesterday's close and the entire list developed a distinctly reac tionary tendency. United, States Steel led the movement being" Offered in lots of 1,000 to 16,000 shares at from 2 to 3 points under yesterday's record price, with general irregularity in other spec ulative favorites. Foreign liquidation was a recurrent reature of Interest. War shares Were again shun.es to a place Of secondary Importance with declines of 2 to 0 points.. Striking exceptions to this ten dency were shown by Bethlehem Steel preferred at 151 1-8, Willys Overland at 166. and Studebaker at-88, all new high records. Total sales of stocks amounted to 975.000 shares. Exchange on London and Paris fell to "new low Tecords, despite the receipt of $20,000,000 gold from London. De mand sterling was quoted at 4.74 5-8 and checks on Paris sold at 5.S1 1-4. There was a better inquiry for in vestment bonds, with greater activity in subordinate issues. Total sales, par value, aggregated $3,840,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. NEW YORK STOCK LIST. American Beet Sugar American Can American Cities, pfd O.
