Sixteen THE "MORNING 5TAk, WILMINGTON, N. C., SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1916. EAST PRUSSIA'S WAR LOSSES HERE COMPILED Surpass Even Earlier "Sensa tional Guesses." Damage and Losa in the War, Especial ly from Two Invasions by the Russians, Taken from Ger man Figure. vj Berlin, Jan. 20. Detailed estimates of what East Prussia has suffered by the war with its two invasions by the Russians have been compiled, and they surpass even the guesses that, earlier, were thought to be wild and sensational and were discounted even by the East Prussians themselves. In the briefest form, the East Prus sian damage and loss is quoted from the German statistics as follows: Entirely or . partly destroyed 24 cities, 600 villages., 300 estates, 34,001) buildings. Plundered 100,000 residences. Killed or seriously .injured 2,000 civilians. Carried off to Russia 10,700 persons. Fugitives who had to leave home 350,000 to 400,000. Killed or carried off by Russians 135.000 horses, 250,000 cattle, 200,000 hogs, 50,000 sheep. 10,000 goats, 600,000 chickens, 50,000 geese. The investigators who have compiled these statistics make it perfectly clear that "only a portion of this damage may be laid directly to the Russians vandalism" and that a part of it is chargeable to the ineivtable ravages of war. lihis is particularly true of that portioi of East Prussia which was the scene of the first invasion. Practically all are agreed that the Russian forces during the first inva sion were soldierly and . orderly, and that most of the acts of violence, plun dering, murder and wilful arson and destruction came in the second anc longer invasion. The Russians, it is said, may on their first invasion have been confident of eventual success and may therefore have desired to spare territory which they ultimately expected to annex. The new and relatively inexperienced troops taking part in the second invasion may have been responsible. Anger and dis appointment at setbacks may have in stilled a spirit of blind revenge. Or, lastly, the Russians may have thought to instill fear into the German forces by their depredations and violence. The total damage caused, both, by legitimate war losses and by devasta tion, the statisticians estimate at $375, 000,000. They place this as the lowest figure and believe that eventually it will have to be revised upward. The $100,000,000 voted by the Prussian Diet for the relief of the province is melt ing away fast, and the work of re habilitation has remlly only just begun. In addition to this sum, money in large quantities has been raised by various communities throughout Germany for corresponding East Prussian districts which is being eaten into rapidly. Reconstruction work, in so far as buildings are concerned, can for the time being go ahead practically only in the more westerly portions of the province. In the parts along the bor der line it will probably be necessary to wait until after the war before be ginning a permanent work of this kind. The province has been divided into 16 districts, presided over by as many head architects with numerous assist ants, who are stiving to attain the proper combination of taste and util ity, and are meeting with every co-operation from the inhabitants. The latter have won the warm ap proval of the authorities by their al most universal willingness to proceed with the agricultural rehabilitation of the province, and its re-stocking with cattle, before they attack the problem of permanent homes for themselves. They may come later. To meet the lack of farm animals with which to carry out this agricul tural rehabilitation, oxen have been imported and captured Russian horses not available for military uses, and German military horses unfit for fur ther service, are being used. Particu larly are efforts being made restore the thoroughbred horse breeding indus try to its former high standard. A. & M. FINDS CHARLOTTE Y. 31. C. A. EASY AGGREGATION Wins Game at Raleigh by Score of 54 to 33 Last Night. (Special Star Telegram.) Raleigh, N. C, Feb. 12. A. & M. easi ly defeated Charlotte Y. M. C. A. here tonight by a score- of 54 to 23. Al though the Tech boys ran up a pretty big score, it is no sign that they play ed star ball. They were very much off both in their passing and shooting. The Charlotte boys did their best, put up a game fight, but were out-classed. Lindsay led the scoring for A. & M. by making eight goals, while Mason and Sullivan were close behind with six a piece. For Charlotte, Hunter led by caging four; McDonald following with three. In the second half, A. & M. sub stituted three scrubs in place of regu lars and these showed up very well. Oliphant is Not , Entitled to Recover Damages. The Superior Court jury in the case of W. M. Oliphant against the Atlantic Coast Line, in which the plaintiff was seeking to recover $20,000 for alleged damages on account of personal inju ries received while in the employ of the defendant company, returned a ver dict yesterday to the effect that the railroad had been guilty of no. negli- gence that caused the plaintiff ' to be hurt. The plaintiff at the time he was injured was employed as switch man for the a. C. L. When court took a recess at 12:30 yesterday until Monday, the trial of the cajg.e of A. W. Pate, et al, against George W. Currie, involving the title to several hundred acres of land at Carolina Beach, was still in progress. It is expected that this case will take several days yet to .finish. It will be the last jury trial at this term or court, which was set for two weeks. Lewis T. Allen, who was suing E. A. Chadwick for money alleged tobe due for caring for the , defendant while he was sick was given judgment against Chadwick for $500. , BROTHERHOOD LYCEUM COURSE. Booth Lowrey at Memorial Hall on Tuesday Evenlng-Seats. The sixth number, Booth Lowrey, will be given in the Memorial Hdl of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church Tuesday evening, at 8:30 P. M. His subject will be "Simon Says Wig-Wag." Booth Lowrey is said to have one great fault. He doesn't invoice himself at first sitting. Why, drat him, each day he grows on your hands. Each day he flashes a light from a new facet. He could furnish an entire Chautauqua programme himself. Booth Lowrey be gan his career as - a lawyer down South. The son of a Confederate gen eral he was elaborately polished in college and came forth with so little vitality that the doctor said, "Young man, you'll never live to enter your profession. Go home and plan the ob sequies." This was splendid advice; for it aroused his contrariness. He there upon had one great purpose to fool the doctor. He studied living as a fine art. Now he is near fifty, a sprightly lad, whose photos slander him into a nice old man with silver lambrequins. His chest spreads seven inches at a full breath, and altogether he is about the most, symmetrical mental, moral, and physical animal one can meet. Booth Lowrey is a platform condiment, and more. There are few men who are so absolutely free, and have so graceful a stage presence. There are few who can dominate an audience. He always awaits for his audience, never prances off ahead of it, dodges it, or lets it worry him. He looks squarely between the eyes, shakes its hand, and treats it like an old friend. He works so easily, never straining himself nor the audience, but making climaxes that shatter things just the same. He cracks a joke and perchance the audience misses it. He just waits with a smile until the joke soaks in, and then laughs with the crowd. The New York Star says of Mm: "For over an hour the audience sat in the Y. M. C. A. auditorium last evening, entirely oblivous to all save Booth Lowrey and his mingled, wit and wis dom, his humor, pathos and satire. If there was ever a lecturer who found his way into the hearts of a James town audience, it was Booth Lowrey and his "Simon Says Wig-Wag". Booth Lowrey has absorbed all the humor and pathos of the South, and has blend ed tiiem into delicate shadings that lighten the heart and leave blithe and free, not oppressed by the sorrow nor wrought to too high a pitch by humor. Reserved seats will be on sale at Munson & Company, for this number, Tuesday, from 8 A. M. until 6 P. M. Season tickets must be shown when reserving seats. Mr. Ahrens expects to go North within a few aays to make apartment houses with a view to-getting suggestions.
