Spot Middling Quoted at 17.31, the Highest Since 1874. New Orleans, Oct. 17. The amount of business, advances gained and price levels reached comblnea today to make the biggest day of the season in the local cotton market. At the topmost levels contracts were 42 to 44 -noints up, with March and May selling above IS cents, the highest future quota tions on the boards since the so-called Smiy season of 13 years ago. Spots were lifted 31 points to 17.31 for mid dling, the highest tn this market emce 1874. The market opened at the advance and held its gains well throughout the day, closing steady at a net rise of 38 to 39 points. Enormous liquidation was easily ab sorbed by a fresh demand which pour etl in from all quarters. It was said large interests were heavy buyers and that their purchases were based chiefly on the demand for spot cotton. : Speculation was stimulated by wet "weather over 'the belt and by the hur ricane in the "gulf which threatened ito strike some part of the cotton regiii. C, Oct. 17-A deal has been completed by the city council with Toledo, Ohio, bond brokers, whereby the Ohio firm will take bonds to be issued by the municipality about the end of this year in exchange for par, accrued interest and a $200 pre mium.
