Malcolm Southerland, a white jitney driver, was arrested this morning and placed under bond charged with driv ing the automobile at the time little Wilcox was hit, and it is alleged that it was Mr. Southerland's car that struck the lad and that Mr. Souther land was driving -at a fast clip and did not stop to investigate thp child's condition. Mr. Southerland denies the charge.. STOCKS BREAK VIOLENTLY Numerous Important Shares Set Back 3 to 5 Points Kalis Were First Issues to Fall. New York, Aug. 30. Stocks fell with extreme violence in the course of to day's short session, professional trad ers taking advantage of the half hol iday jn honor of the city troops to re new their selling operations with in creased vigor. The set-back ranged from 2 to 5 points in numerous shares of impor tance and as much as to 7 to 13 points in the more speculative class, notably Industrial Alcohol and Texas Company. While the decline was at its height the financial district was agog with reports to the effect that war boards at Washington had fixed upon very drastic cuts in prices of such products &o sieeis, coppers ana oils. Rails were the first .to break, equip ments followed on the sharp decline in Bethlehem Steel, new stock, to 105, representing an extreme reversal of points. United States Steel next offer ed in lots of 1,000 to over 2,000 shares down to 116, a gross decline of 3 with virtually no recovery. Call money developed stronger ten dencies, opening at 3 per cent, but advancing to 4 per cent before the end of the session. The bond market was heavy. Liber ty 3s moved in the narrow range of 99.92 to 99.96. Total sales of bonds, par value, aggregated $2,240,000. Unit ed States bonds, old issues, were un changed on call. NEW YORK STOCK LIST. (Special Star Correspondence.) Wst Rale! eh. N. C. August 30. On account of the great number of in quiries coming into the Agricultural Extension Service in regard to the sale nf nnd nroducts direct to the various army camps in the South, Director B. W. Kilgore of the Agricultural exten sion Service, has sent a letter to all the men and women county agents over the State informing them in regard to the recent ruling made by Henry G. Sharpe, Quartermaster General, Wash ington, D. C. In this ruling it is stat ed that no purchase of supplies is made by the office at Washington but is under the supervision of the Depart ment Quartermaster of the various de partments into which the United States has been divided. For North Carolina subsistence sup plies required for camps and army posts in the Southeastern Depart ment are procured under the super vision of the Department Quartermas ter, People's Office Building, Charles ton, South Carolina. The Department is always glad to procure supplies from producers wherever it is practi cable to do so and it is suggested that those rho .jiave material to sell the army to take up the matter In this Several co-operative canning facto ries have taken np the matter of sell ing their pack direct to tne army posts and have not understood as to the methods to pursue. It is hoped that this letter to the agents will aid in clearing up the matter to a large ex tent. B & I Way No better way to safe ly "invest your earnings. Carolina B & L.
