There was fur ther sharp advances in the cotton mar ket today which reflected continued drought in the south-west and the stim ulating egect 01 tne war news. The general slit closed firm at a net srain of 40 to 51 points. The market was firm from the start. First prices were seven points lower on November, an inactive month, but generally 8 to 30 points higher, on re newed covering- and trade buying. The encouraging character of the war news, Liverpool's full response to yester days local gains -with talk of better prospects for ocean tonnage based up on London cables and the western belt forecast for dry weather were all fac tors on the advance. After showing net gains of about 40 to 47 points the market reacted slightly under.' realizing which seemed to reflect renewed ner vousness uvei piiLW uiing possioixities. Th.s resulted from Washington dis patches to the erreot that a Joint con ference of bankers, manufacturers and growers had agreed to favor stabiliz ing or price-fixing by tha government. Except for profit taking, however, there was very little selling and the market reacted tne mghest points of the day in the late trading on contin ued favorable war news. The close was within 3 or 4 points of the top. While based primarily upon the fear of rapid deterioration in Texas crop prospects, local brokers said the buy ing was probably stimulated by enthu siasm over the success of counter-attacks by French and American troops on the western front and, business was more active in the last half hour, al though its volume was at no time large.
