Liquidation. New York, ; Nov. 13. Peace and its attendant problems and uncertainties loomed larger on the financial horizon today, the stock market undergoing another period of liquidation which encompassed nearly all parts of the active list. The decline was accelerated by fur ther restriction of credits and the at titude of conservative banking inter ests who encouraged general curtail ment of speculative accounts despite the more hopeful views of leaders in the steel industry. Speculative favorites ver at lowest prices in the later dealings but rallied from fractions to 1 1-2 points on sup port then accorded rails and shippings and the further strength of Mexican Petroleum. A few of the more popular indus trials approximated minumum quota tions of the year during the several re versals, but these also rallied on the relaxation of pressure at the end. United States Steel was again the pivotal feature, its extreme decline of 1 1-2 points to 97y 7-8 being quickly followed, however, by a rally in which two thirds of the loss was recovered. Rails yierded 1 to 4 1-2 points at their worst. Canadian Pacific display ed actual weakness for a time but in this division losses were half-way re paired, Southern Pacific and Reading receiving support at recessions. Coppers were heavy, oils and motors irregular and specialties, fertilizers excepted, mainly lower. Baldwin Lo comotive was again the only equip ment stock to manifest constant strength.. Bonds followed the trend of stocks, Liberty issues holding steady while railway and industrial issues lost fractions to a point. Sales, par val ue, aggregated $10,250,000.' Old U. S. bonds unchanged on call. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. American Beet Sugar 63 American Can 46 American Car and Foundry . . The usual wide fluctuations were seen in cotton today although trading was greatly limited by the order of. the war in dustries board prohibiting further short selling of contracts for specula tive account. This order caused the greatest surprise and called a halt to the bear operations that have been under way for some time. The telegram prohibiting short sell ing was received before the opening prices were off 200 points on the most active months on the first call and ap parently the decline would have been wider but .for the war rule limiting daily fluctuations to ten dollars a bale. After the first rush of selling shorts started to buy' covers and, quickly put prices up on themselves, finding almost no selers. The 200 point rule had to be applied to the upturn which fol lowed. During the remainder of the session the market was dull. During a good part of the session prices were at a net decline of about 30 to 6Qr points. Last prices showed net losses of 125 to 200 points. Spots were marked down 100 points which reduced quotations on middling to 29.38. The closing price for Decem ber was 25.35.
