ROBESON FAIR TO , OPEN ON TUESDAY Will Last Four Days and Be "Bigger and Better." v Demonstration In Lwmiberton Monday Sunased Anything That Ever Happened in That Town . Robeson New. By F. GBOVER BRITT. Lumberton, Nov. 16. Everything is being put in readiness for the annual Robeson county fair which will open here Tuesday morning, November 19. The fair will last four days end in dications are that the fair this year will be "bigger and better" and draw larger crowds than previous fairs. Be sides the farm exhibits, the mid-way and other attractions will be here. A feature of the fair will be the bet ter babies contest on Thursday. The best all-round baby will be awarded a prize. The fair will be held in the Star tobacco warehouse. First street. The biggest demonstration Lumber ton has experienced in many years, perhaps, ever, was put over Monday. The four cotton mills here closed down at noon and the employes were given a half-holiday. Everything calculated to make a noise was brought out and practically everybody took part in the celebration brought about by the news that Germany had signed the armis- A crowd that filled the court room attended a peace celebration Monday evening. The celebration was held in connection with e meeting called .in the interest of the united war workers drive for funds. J- P. Russell, a Lum berton man who has been doing "T" work at Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga., for several miSnths, was the principal speaker of the occasion. A telephone message from the Star office first brought the glad news to Lumberton and soon the arrival of The Star satisfied many minds that the armistice had actually been signed. The demonstration lasted well into Monday night. Indications are thiat Robeson will reach its allotment in the united war work drive. Many towtnships are way "over the top." The campaign has progressed very satisfactorily in Lum berton, regardless of the fact that there has been some noted opposition. Home will not be Jiweet to some after the boys come home. The remains of Duncan Kinlaw of the U. S. navy arrived here Tuesday from Portsmouth, Va., where he died Sunday. Deceased was a son of G. B. Kinlaw of Route 3, Lumberton and had been in the navy two years. Death resulted from Influenza-pneumonia. In terment was made at Back Swamp church "Wednesday at 10:30 a. m. Mr. Kinlaw is survived by his wife and three children, the youngest one month old. A memorial tablet, bearing the names of Robeson soldiers and sailors who have given their lives in the fight for freedom of the worlds is soon to be erected in the court housed Robeson has given around 25 sons to the ause of liberty and these will not be forgot ten. Reports of the banks in Robeson make a fine showing. Many farmers have got the banking habit. Bishop Darst of Wilmington will preach at Trinity Episcopal church here tomorrow at 11 a, m. The Pastime theatre opened yester day after being closed down seven weeks on account of the influenza epi demic. All Robeson schools yill open Monday, November 18, having been closed during the same time on account of the epidemic -Relatives of two more Robeson sol diers have been advised of their death at the front in Prance. Duncan -C. Shaw of Lumber Bridge was killed in action and John McLean of Route 6, Lumherton, died October 16 of wounds received in action. Examinations for white, Indian and colored teachers will be conducted by Prof. J. R. Poole, county superintend ent of public instruction, here Novem ber 22 at 10:30 a. m. T. W. Trogdon, local government cotton grader, left Thursday for Lit tleton in response of a wire message stating that his sister, Miss Etta Trog don, died there early that morning. License has been issued in Robeson for the marriage of Charlie F. Phil lips, Jr., and Janie Williamson; Wm H. Tolar and Mary C. Baxley. B. Sam Edwards has been elected as sistant fire chief of Lumberton suc ceeding the late H. C. Rogers. Various papers have recently been commenting on the fact that certain ladies whose husbands were called into the army are conducting the af fairs at home with marked success. There are several instances of that kind in Lumberton. The Star corres pondent has in mind a few cases where the ladies took hold when their hus bands were callied into military ser vice and the business has continued apparently as successfully as before There is much complaint among farmers, as well as others, about the slump in cotton prices. Most farmers ae holding on to their staple, how ever. AIRPLANE DID ITS PART IN- PALESTINE Figured Considerably In the Opera tions Which Resulted In the Cap ture of Nazareth. London, Nov. 8. (Correspondence of the Associated Press.) The detail ed story which has just reached here of General Allenby's great advance in Palestine shows that the airplane played a big part in the operations which led to the taking of Nazareth. The chief object of the airmen was to prevent the Turks from gaining knowledge of important cavalry move ments. Big bombing machines re mained throughout the night of Sep tember 18 over the principal Turkish airdrome at Jenin, which was sub jected to a constant rain of explosives, tremendous damage being caused. At daybreak the airmen's mthmt became sensational. Fast machines in pairs, each carrying a' lumber of 2T pound bombs, "sat" over Jenin all day each pair being relieved at' pre-arranged Intervals. Any movement in the airdrome brought a bomb and the enemy did not get a single , machine off the. ground, . thereby permittingthe British" cavalry,, to, execute its critical Jtorning . movement -without " being .ob Wved. The result, was that Nazareth was entered, at 3.- o'clock i the' next TELEPHONE 5 1 Call No. Bl and a. Western Union messenger will be sent tor your ad vertisement for column. (Correspondence of The Associated Press.)- Recommendation that the American military authorities in France should, after the war, take charge of reestablishing the devastated regions of France and that German prisoners should be made to repair the damages they did in France, will be made by the American agricultural commission now here. "We are going' to report to the secre tary of war and the secretary of agri culture," said W. O. Thompson, presi dent of Ohio State University, and chairman of the commission, "that the work of rehabilitating the devastated territory is an army problem and that the military authorities should deal with it. "The problem of tilling the land which has been the. scene of the battles is a very serious one for it is filled with unexploded shells. The firuit trees have been completely eradicated by ruthless felling. You can charge indemnities but you cannot get land ready to plough without danger. . "The Germans should take the risk as part of the price to be paid for their wanton devastations. From tho econ omic point of view, if we allow German prisoners to return home to reinforce Germany without this French rehabili tation, Germany has again the lead on France. France is left flat on her back and Germany gets a long start. Even after suffering a military defeat, she "wins an economic victory. "This devastation was admittedly in tended to ruin France so that she could not recover for years, while Germany untouched is ready to profit by her breaches of international" law. Yet, as this commission sees it, as soon as the country is ready for agricultural re storation, the agricultural population will be on the spot waiting to rebuild their shattered farms and farm equip ment. "They are pitifully attached to their homesteads though in thousands of cases there is only the cellar remain ing. Though not their war alone, France and Belgium have furnished the battlefield. We are here to fight with Frsftiee for our common defense, the battlefield being furnished by circum stances. . The restoration of these bat tlefield far mlands is an inter-ally prob lem." Clemson Defeats Citadel. Columbia, Sv C, Nov. 16. Clemson college defeated the Citadel here this afternoon 7 to 0. The only touch down was made by Odell in the first quarter on- a forward pass following Citadel's fumble on the 30-yard line. Citadel pushed the ball over in the final quarter but was penalized -for crawling and thereafter lost the ball on down in the shadow of the goal posts. Reames, running for Clemson and Kollock's kicking for Citadel were features. ' Premier of Poland. Basel, Nov. 16.
