These features failed to bring in any mater ial volume of fresh buying, however, and the market became .very unsettled in the late trading. There was some selling lie re by brokers with both Li-erpool and Papanese connections, presumably in liquidation of old long line or hedges, and late in the day tnere was also selling for New Orleans account. General business was very quiet and the market narrow enough to be in fluenced by comparatively small orders. Aside from a momentary advance of 3 to 13 points around the opening, it was a session of weakness in the cotton market today. The initial rise was quickly replaced by a net decline which was gradually but constantly widened until the very close, which was at the lowest of the "J, when it amounted to 115 po 122 Points. The market officially was ton a weak on the close. According to floor comment the mar ket felt some hedge selling in the early Part nf the day, continued to slide off under dullness and finally felt 'mueh 'emulation as the result of ,the poor snowing made by mill takings of Am erican cotton for this week which, ac cording to Hester, were only 329,000 ba, against 425,000 this week last iear and 425,000 this week two years sgo. New York, Nov. 29. Modification of the restrictions recently placed on brokers' loans and assurances from Washington that, cancellations or cut ting of rwar contracts woujd be under taken in a spirit of "fairness and help fulness." were among the faotprs which turned today's stock market from "its heavy opening to one of general strength In the latter dealings. In general, prices were depressed at the outset, by reports over the holi day which rendered the industrial situation more obscure and created further apprehension .respecting the government's attitude towards the rail roads. Buying of shippings, coppers and oils set i nbefore midday, followed by an aggressive demand for high grade transportations, Pacific again featur ing that group. Extreme advances in that division ranged from 3 to 6 points, grangers and coalers following at gains of 1 to 3 points. U. S. Steel, selling exdividendp of 8 points also manifested reactionary ten-, dencies during the morning, but re covered all of its 1 point loss, clos ing at a gain of almost oae point. Independent steels, equipments, mo tors and oils were one to four points down during the forenoon, but bounded forward with other leaders in every noteworthy instance, ending at a sub stantial advance. Mexican Petroleum was the chief feature of the specula tive issues reversing its setback of 4 points with a gain of 3 points. Among the various specialties. United States Rubber, sugar and leathers scored substantial gains, but distilling shares and tobaccos participated only moderately in the brisk rebound of the final hour. Railway bonds derived some strength from the inquiry for stocks of that class, but the general list was irregu lar, liberty issues again weakening with the fcurth 4s at the new low of 96.90. Total sales, par value, ag gregated $10,775,000. Old U. S. bonds unchanged. DUN'S TRADE REVIEW. New York, Nov, 2rDun's tomorrow will say: "Not through jffgnce of important requirements or lack of sustained pur chasing, power, but mainly because of expectations of downward revisions of prices, even now being realized in some instances, forward business is largely held in abeyance, "hat many buyers are deferring new commitments as far as possible awaiting the further reac tion of prices which seems plainly foresahdowed is the keynote of ad vances from about every center of prominence and uncertainty regarding the exact disposition of various res trictions which stil1 remain effective la a not insignificant element in the present hesitation. Yet with conservat ism and caution conspicous features, there is now clearly less apprehension of the results of the economic changes which must inevitably be withnesed, and the transition to a peace basis is continuing without apparent signs of serious dislocation of trade and indus try.
