' By W. J. MARTIN. ? Raleigh, Dec. 2. The corporation ommission turned over to the state ireasurer today $91,000, balaitce of in heritance taxes collected the pat fis- sal year by the commission under the law passed by the legislature two. years ego giving the commission this urork. The payment of .this, sum into the state treasury rounds up a total of $374,000 total inheritance tax col lections by the commission the past year. This is in comparison with less than $50,000 which was collected for the year just prior to the delegation 9t this tax collection to the commis sion. Members of the commission say that they ere confident that the inheritance tax revenue for the state the next year Will be fully $1,000,000. The taxes the past year came from every quarter of the state with the tax against the Cone estate, Greensboro, constituting Secidely the biggest lump sum. It is believed that with some . readjustments tf the inheritance tax laws by the leg islature soon to meet it will be pos sible to run up this source of stete revenue to a very considerable sum. It is a notable fact that the Kentucky ewspapers-are boasting that the state can easily pay off its entire indebted ness with the inheritance tax revenue n the estate of Mrs. R. W. Bingham, Who was Miss Kenan,' of Wilmington. V. H. Woolard resigns as assistant State bank examiner and will be suc ceeded by J. G. Nichols, who served a. long while as assistant examiner and then resigned to take up war work in the navy aviation department. He is. Just back from the training service at Jvliama, Pla, Mr. Woolard takes an Important position with The Pamlico Guano Co., a branch of the Royster Guano Co., of Norfolk, "Va. -j Governor Bickett has issued e spe- ( eial appeal for the people of the state to rally to putting over the top the campaign in this state for war sav ings stamps, being pressed by Col. ries of Winston-Salem, as director for Mils state. There was only one county Jn the state that . gave e majority against the constitutional amendment for a six i "months school term. This was Yad kin, where there were 590 for and 665 against the amendment. The 101,665 majority that the amendment received In the state is a tremendous gratiflca- j tion to Ir. J. T. Joyner, state super- J Intendent of public instruction, who says that the adoption of this amend ment opens the Way for a new era for education in the state, especially con servative, constructive educational legislation to come before the next leg islature in paving-the. way for simpler and more equitable division 'of the echool funds from taxation as between the county and the state. He believes chat the way will be opened now for much more efficient instruction and supervision in the schools all through the state, every section being guaran teed six months term of schools with out regard to local conditions. Dr. Joyner says the members of the new legislation will come definitely in structed for legislation that will as sure ,the fullest, benefits of the new constitutional changes in the law, both parties being committed to it. Mrs. Clarence Johnson, who is serv ing her second term as president of the North Carolina Federation of Womens Clubs, has been secured by Insurance Commissioner Young to devote her time to furthering the organization and general activities of the North Carolina safety leagues which the commissioner has been "having organ ized in the schools and among the wo mens clubs and other civic bodies for lire prevention and safety first effort designed to prevent as faT as possible the heavy toll of lives and property exacted in North Carolina annually by fire and accidents. It will be Mrs. Johnson's special work to keep in touch with these safe ty leagues and their organization and work and with the womens' clubs and other civic organizations of the wo men to enlist their special interest n this conservation work. BIG PACKING COMPANIES ARE ALLEGED TO FORM A C03IBINE Washington, Dec. 2. The federal trade commission, in a supplemental report to congress today charged the five bigr meat packing companies of the country with a combination in re straint of trade and with controlling Ihe sale of livestock and meats. . Evidence is cited at length to sup port the charges. Swift & Company, Armour' & Company, Morris & Go., Wilson & Co., Inc., and the Cudahy backing Co. are named. "The evidence of the present day ex istence of a meat combination among the five big packers is voluminous and letailed," the report said. "This evi dence is convincing, consisting as it does largely of documents written by the packers or their agents and includ ing the memoranda made by one of the participants in the combination of the terms and conditions agreed upon- at various meetings of the packers."
