Aside from oils, motors and other speculative special ties, which registered gross gains of 2 to 8 points today's stock market presented no features of interest. Trad ing was light, easier money conditions failing to stimulate public support. The petroleum group contributed far more than its usual quota, Mexican recording a gross gain of 8 points after an early setback, while Royal Dutch. Texas Company and Pan-American common and pfd made extreme ad vances of 2 to 4 points. U. S. Steel and associated issues were steady to firm during the early and intermediate periods, but fell back late. Rails were apathetic through out, even the seconaary or low-priced shares of that division evincing none of their recent activity or strength, shippings rose and fell within narrow bounds, advices from London anent the -Mercantile Marine deal occasion ing restraint. Motors were very irregular, mainly in consequence of the uncertain move ment of Studebaker which suffered from further selling pressure in con nection with the company's proposed financing. Metals, tobaccos, leathers, fertilizers and the distilling Issues lacked defin ite tendencies on greatly reduced op erations, becoming moderately unset tled, however, in the general reaction of the last hour. Dealings in bonds were without es pecial feature, both domestic and fpr- eign issues snowing moderate irregu larity. Liberty bonds eased again, but held above recent low records. Total sales, par value, aggregated $9,650,000. Old U. S. bonds were unchanged on call. MARINE. Cleared. Cleared. Isonomia, 2,474 tons, Gett, Newport News, Heide & Co. Imports. Str. Allen called atentlon to the prevalence of the illicit whiskey traffic in Lenoir county, and referred to commercialized vice in South Kinston as another evil demand ing the attention of the authorities. As regards the former. Judge Allensaid, this county is not forse than numerous others in the state. In fact, he assert ed, the reputations of all of North Car olina in this respect has gone abroad to the discredit of the commonwealth, and North Carolina men at army camps have-been twitted about it. Judge Al len said he regarded exposure as of prime importance in the breaking up of crime. In days gone by, he said, long sentences were imposed on horse thieves, without breaking up horse stealing. With the advent if the tele phone and telegraph conditions were changed.
