V" HIE MORNING STAB; WILMINGTON,- N; C.; SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21,1918 -v. 5EVEN n FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL COTTON TURNS FIRM Hich Trices of the Day Made In the I.ate Trading. Closing: 27 to 65 Points Up. ew York, Dec. 20. Early reactions vere followed by renewed firmness in the cotton market today and prices made new high ground for the move ment in the late trading. January contracts sold up from 27.77 to-28.45, while December contracts touched the much talked of thirty-cent level. The 'lose was firm at 28.44 for January nd at a net advance of 27 to 65 points. The census report showing- 10,252, iO" bales of cotton ginned rrior to December 13, compared with 10,131, 594 bales last year, was slightly over expectations and may have promoted realizing during the early trading. The opening was irregular at an- advance of 27 points to a decline of 1 point. December held last night's closing Azures but later months eased off af ter the call with March reacting to 39 and with the more active de jveries selling some 18 to 20 points jet lower. Trade buying wasrather active on this setback, however, and the market soon firmed up on covering by early sellers which seemed to be stimulated by the more favorable view cf the goods situation, continued bul lish spot advices and reports that southern shippers were -finding it dif ficult to secure the spot cotton grades wanted to fill their contracts in the south. Frices reached the highest levels 6t tbe day in the late trading with March selling at 27.24 and closing at 27.1$. A Plus correction of 72,000 bales was reported in the season's ex ports which probably served to em phasize the talk of an increasing out ward movement and reports were re ceived from Galveston that 20 steam ers were expected there for cotton during the next two weeks. Bradstreet's to morrow will .say: "Animation flowing from holiday buying sharply contrasts , with the slow movements evidenced in whole sale lines,, with the, effects of cancel lations, with downward revisions of some prices and with uncertainty created either by the divergent views as to the future expressed by promin ent personages or by concerns over the fact that the government has large supplies, of unused materials to market. Inventorying is under way, traveling salesmen are in for the holi days, small Io,t filling orders conveyed by mail are the rule, and in cases where unexpectedly large stocks have been revealed, the policy is to clear decks. In fact, the general attitude as to manufactured ,goodj is to re- duce prices in order to hasten read justments and make a market. "Auction sales of wool conducted by the government have disclosed a strong demand and good prices for desirable materials, but low.-grade stuff seemed to go .begging for takers, and" offerings of woolens similarly made brought satisfactory prices for men's material while, showing weak ness in "women's goods, the products going to jobbers rather than to manu fficturers. STOCKS AGAIN SLUMP Yesterday's Market Recorded Fifth Successive Set-Back of the Week Liberty Bonds Off. . New York, Dec. 20. Stocks record ed their fifth successive set-back of the week today, declines being resum ed after an irregular opening in which a few leaders showed tempor ary strength, probably, on short cov ering. The additional liquidation and bearish aggression were, attributed to increasing signs of dissatisfaction more particularly as affecting the rail roads and general industries. This was exemplified by ?Mr. McAdoo's at titude towards the transportations and 1 reports of fresh cancelations of war contracts and cuts in. commodity prices. Yet another reason was provided by the implied request of the treasury de partment for an indefinite continuance of restricted money conditions, tl though call funds were in freer supply supply at as low as 3 per cent. Renewal of heavy selling of liberty bonds on a scale approximating yes terday's enorjnous turnover with the fourth 4s at the new low mark of 94.50 was not calculated to allay ap prehension, the first 4's incidentally making a new minimum for the year at 92.90. ; The one encouraging note was sounded by the sale to a banking syndicate of $50,000,000 Pennsylvania railroad 5 per cent 'bonds and the speedy absorption of that issue at a large over-subscription. That is the large financial undertaking by private bankers since the close of the war and bespeaks a sound investment situa tion. Rails, shippings, utilities and cop pers were the chief elements of heavi ness, though rallying quite substantial ly towards the close. Oils, tboccos and a few specialties were relatively firm. Convertible railroad bonds and trac tions eased one to 2 points but inter nationals were steady and more active. Total sales, par value $20,400,000. Old U. S. bonds unchanged on call.
