New York, Dec 30 An early ad ance in the coton market today met increased realizing: and considerable., tedge selling under which prices broke sharply itn tho cloM 'barely steady at a net decline of 65 to 105 points. January contracts sold up to 30.45 during the early trading- and broke to 23.30 compared with 29.95 at the close (t Saturday and 28.98 at the low point tf Saturday morning. There Tvas a renewal of Saturday's buying- ""'itn bullish sentiment' en couraged by the" firm cables, and re ports of a better tone of the goods pirket. The opening- was firm at an advance of 10 to 30 points and ac tive months sold 45 to 50 points net higher during the early trading with March touching 29.00 and Maw 28.10. There was reiuying by some of the jacent sellers and a moderate demand from trade sources on the advance, the latter being- accompanied by re ports that some yarn contracts that j!4d been canceled were being- re instated. The advance met considerable re alizing vhich was fairly -well absorb ed on. reactions of 30 to 35 points dur ing the middle of the day. But later the selling became more active and general. s New Orleans was one of the more active sellers here, which led to talk of increased spot offerings from the interior, and the break extended to 27.85 for March and 26.85 for May. - Closing prices were at the lowest point of the day. Part of the selling was atributed to realizing for New Tears day and notwithstanding the tain or ireer oneTings or low gradeB the decline was most generally at tributed to an easier technical posi tion and liquidation of long accounts. New York, Dec. 30.-Cottonseed was duU wltii nrices' nomiaaU: Prime STOCKS YERY V .. V v - - ' - : . Yesterday's Marfcei . Characterized , the Renewed Liquidation of Stocks and Bonds. " New York, Dec 30. Renewed liquidation- or stocks" and 'bonds, the latter in: unprecedented; volume, charactei-ia-ed the feverishly: active trading on tho Stok Exchange,- today, several Im portant issues, including rails, record ed lowest quotations of the year. The movement was the most com prehensive of any session ot the month and again lacking definite or plausible explanation other than the wide-spread" belief that, corporation and individual holders ot securities are closing out accounts to adjust income tax returns for the year. In all probability, much of the sell ing or rails was impelled by the many adverse statements for November sub mited by the Interstate Commerce Commission, such systems as Pennsy lvania, Reading, Baltimore and Ohio, Canadian Pacific, Chicago, and North western, St. Paul, Rock Island and New Haven reporting net losses ranging from 7PO,000 to almost $2,000,000. Recessions among standard rails ran from 1 to 2 points, but among issues of lesser importance losses were more extensive. Industrials and equipments, coppers, motors and oils yielded 1 to 3 points and utilities 1 to 5. A few conspicuous exceptions to the 'downward trend, were shippings Marine, pfd. rallying sharply after its early setback. Southern Pacific and U. S. Steel, the latter losing only the smallest fraction on the moderate ral ly at the close. Losses among some of the more spe culative bond issues, including' Pen nsylvania consolidated 5s, St. Paul con vertible 4s, Seaboard Air Line ad justmant 5s and Interborough Rapid Transit 5s extended from 2 to 5 per cent, ibut the -heaviness of liberty is- sues, especially the .fourth 4s at the new irHnimum of 94 was the over shadowing 'feature. Sales of bonds were estimated at $45,000,000, par value, which exceeds the previous record by about $10,000, 000. The liberty grdup contributed approximately SO per cent to thl total. Old U.
