SOUTHERN BELL TELEPHONE & TELEGRAPH CO. the Problem To fumish the telephone service which will be needed in the state of North Carolina during 1921, additional facilities must be To bufld these facflWes will cost $1,048,162.00. The Company ; has no money with which to construct these facilities.--- ' - All new construction must be paid for out of the capital account of the Company ; all of the Company's present capital is invested in the plant and facilities now used by you. This money can be had m only one way; it must be invested in .the Company's business. This money can be had from only one source; from the investing public, people who have surplus money to invest. Part of the investing public of this country live in North Carolina. These' facilities are needed to serve the people of North Carolina. Will the investigating public of North Carolina furnish this money) Every dollar the public of North Carolina will invest m the Com pany will be used to construct plant facilities in the state of North Carolina foV the use of the people of North Carolina. If the investing public living in North Carolina will not invest their surplus money in the Company's business, the Company must get the money needed to serve you from the investing public in other states; from strangers. ' - Can you expect strangers to invest their money in a business lo cated in North Carolina in which the people of North Carolina will not invest their money ? The facilities how used -by you were paid for by money furnished by strangers. They know what they are earning in North Carolina while" serving you just as you know. Can yoii ask or expect them to furnish more money for your use in North Carolina under present conditions? ; If the people of North Carolina will not supply the money needed to serve themselves they must induce strangers to furnish it. This can be done by allowing the strancr to earn a fair and just profit upon his money now invested in North Carolina serving you, and upon all additional money required to. furnish you j service, t This can be done m but one way: by paying fair and just rates. When the Company is legally authorized to charge a rate which will yield a fair and just profit over and above the cost of furnish ing you service in the state of North Carolina,; it can secure from strangers living in other states the money needed to furnish service to the state of North Carolina. The Company must have this right before It can get the money. The people of North Carolina must act first, y To have telephone service you must either invest your own money in the Company's business, or permit the Company to earn such a profit upon its present and future investment as will induce strangers to invest their money inthe state , of North Carolina to serve you. v The next advertisement tvitt tet$ wKat pro fit the Company . asks to earn.
