ARMY GAS MASKS NOT DESIGNED FOR MINERS They Afford No Protection in ' Mine and Factory Fires VASHINGTOnT 3In. 5. Implicit faith in an instrument that? saved the lives of thousands of Amrl(9n cnl. diers in France is "daily endangering me lives of scores of men in industrial life in the United States. Dr. F. G. Cot trell, director of the bureau of mines, said today,-in another warning against the use of army gas masks inmine ex plosion and mine fires. Despite repeat ed warning, from the department, min ers and persons engaged in mine res cue work persist in using army gas masks, Dr. Cottrell said, although the devices are of practically .no use iri the avej-age mine disaster. Reviewing a number of cases recent ly where men attempting mine rescue work with'army type as masks ,had been overcome and had died, Dr. Cot trell said:,.. "These fatalities illustrate the futil ity of 'the, belief quite prevalent throughout the country that this army type of gas mask will protect the wear er against any type .of gases under, all conditions. The fact as that the army gas mask was a very excellent device for the purpose intended, that of pro tecting our soldiers from tjie diabolical gases used in warfare. , The mask gave the men such absolute, protection that when they returned from France they wre so enthusiastic over its perform ance they were willing to indorse the gas mask for all purposes of protection against poisonous "gases. .These men, it would seem, do not realize that out in the open air of the battlefield the percentage of gas in the air would not be nearly so large" as in the confti.ed spaces of: mine or factory fire." The army mask affords absolutely no protection against carbon monoxide gas, which is most prevalent in mine fires and factory disasters, Dr. Cottrell said, adding that the maslts are actu ally a menace because dTthe false feel ing of security they give the wearer. The bureau of mines indorses the use of self-contained oxygen mine rescue breathing apparatus and is prepared to furnish information regarding its use. COMMERCIAL. SECRETARIES IX . A OJVFERENCE AT.
