M. 4 . THE MORfttNG STAR, WIIJVIINGTON, N. C. ; MONDAY, JANUARY X71921 SEVEN; Business .Today. A "Buy Now" Movement: On. Almost overnight a big campaign has been opened ift this country to put. the public in a buyirimooa,-ahd " so-called prosperity posters in vivid colors are fcelng speeded to important places bear ing the slogans "Buy , Now hd Put the lien Back to Work." or "Your Purchase Keeps America Employed." The na tional prosperity bureau, which was or ganized only last week..J?y 24 trade as sociations, is behind the move. It has already sent out a questionnaire to 96 in dustrial leaders and 8.000 organizations, asking for the facts which, might give a basis for propaganda. Th'e 18,000. sales, men of the National Counoit,o. Travel ing Salesmen have affiliated with-the buroau and agreed to carry ? literature and smiles with them-to dispel gloom. The eight bis questions ask such things s whether "normalcy?' has reached vour" business' or community, whether unemployment is increasing, v whether foe "buyers strike" is over, whether retailers of a given cHy are co-operating in bringing prices down , and whether it is not time to urge the peo ple to buy rather than save. The word ing of the questionnaire makes.lt easy to suegs what answer is-expected, and it remains to be seen whether the plan will start a substantial buying move nient, or burst into nothing, A Vhere the Dollar Go - About 34 cents of each dollar "spent on retail merchandise goes to the re tailer, of which only six cents repre sents' profit, according to-, a survey made early in 1916 and covering; the "products of 40 typical factories traced from maker to user. "Thirteen' cents coes to the wholesaler, of which -three cents is profit. The remaining 58 cents oes to the manufacturers., of--which 37 cents is charged to production costs, 12 cents to selling costs, and four jjents - to profit. These composite averages are made from studies including factories Canadian Securitieis The attention of a great number of investors has been called to Canadian government external bonds by their remarkable advance last .week in syrn--uathy with the forward movement in Liberty bonds. Apart--from the two issues maturing this year, there are three Canadian external gold ; bonds traded in on the New York Stock ex change. They were brought .out in this county and are payable, princi pal and Interest, in American . dollars, so that fluctuations in Canadian . ex change need not be taken ; into con sideration. They are free of Canadian taxes and are direct obligations- Of th Canadian government but are not se cured by mortgage or pledge of se curities. Yields are 65 to TJO Pe Cent v - . The or? ganlzation was ;formed v .In;; January, 19 1 8, L but did. not . undertake; trite larger service " until the newj connection was established. - . , His Presents -4 Opportunities and Problems federal Income tax,: -'state - taxes and partly, from surtaxes. Comparison between the Canadian 6 9 of 1929 and the United JCingdom,: bonds ojf the same rate and maturity is more direct because neither of them -la jgxempf from- American taxation. . The., British issue is selling two - points higher, yielding 6.25 per cent, but" the greater part of the difference is due to the possibility of an exchange profit frora the conversion 'of the British 5Hs into normal war bonds. c . ! ' External 8s of 1037 Payable nt Par Depreciation of Canadian exchange makes -it possible for American invest tors . to procure an . internal Canadian government bond which compared with the external 5s due. in "1931, ma tures six years later and gives a yield six-tenths per -cent higher. The o&e referred" to is the 5 per cent war loan maturing March 1, 1937. At the pres ent rate of exchange these bonds can bes bought at the1 American equivalent pf 81, giving a. yield of 6.95 per cent; or; a" "current deturn of 6.03 per cent. The principal. , objection to a f oreugrj Internal ssue is" that fact that, while purcha"Sable at a discount equal to the depreciation of foreign exchange, Irt-j terest is payable in that same depre4 ciated exchange. That objection, howi ever, oes not apply to this Canadian issue , because interest Is " payable at the piSr of exchange. Thus 5 per cent per annum means $50 interest on the $l,000'i bond, no . matter how greatly Canadian exchange is , depreciated. In this cjase principal, also, is payable at par i of exchange. - The outstanding amount is $87,762,400.
