s V THE MORNING STAR, WILMINGTON, N, C4 SATURDAY, JANUARY. 29, 1921. TEN I v 1 SPOKES;:;. I FOR LUMBAGO ( Sv B GOSHJ ' word as fln&l, as stipulated iii : the i If wrestling is to continue as Wit- agreement. He drank water and even j mington's major sport ana iw "tain the high place it h:i won in the mirdH oi a sport-loving publia there must be, on the part of tlio fans,-a v dearer understanding of thft rules of . the game, and on the ,part of the principals and promoters a .more speci fic system of agreements., ,- There must be no repetition of the : affair at the Academy Thursday night when wrangling and arguing marred what woulu otnerwiBe.;have been the greatest mat exhibition ever staged in Wilmington and' ended with more or less dissatisfaction to the thousand o- more fans who jammed the audi torium for the second of the Hanson Ellis bouts. Tiiere'was no need for an uproar When Iteferee John He-racle called the bout at midnight after Hanson and Ellis had battled three hours and twenty minutes without a fall. Under the Police Gazette rules, than which -there is no higher auWority in tne square circle, John was right. Mid night ended the battle. It was within John's jurisdiction to award a decision then to either of the wrestlers, or to call It a draw. Heracle chose to ren der no decision, automatically making the bout a draw. The fact that Promoter Cates ad vertised this particular bout to a finish with no time limit, figured not all unless the articles of agreement be tween Hanson and EUis specifically stimulated that the match should con tinue after 12 o'clock. For ' instance, consider a professional baseball game. All ball games are to a finish, but if neither of two contesting teams have earned a lead at sundown, the umpire will , halt the battl'j unless there is an agreement between rhe opposing managers to the contrary In other words rules in any sport, may be dispensed with to some extent, pro vided there is an agreement to this effect, otherwise the rules prevail- Promoter Cates and both Hanson nd Ellis no: doubt intended that Thurs day's battle should go to an actual finish, or until one wrestler had won two falls.' but the simple insertion of the clause "to a finish" in the contract, cannot be construed as over-ruling the laws of th,e same. It should have been specifically stated in the agreement that the time limit should have no effect on the match. Heracle's inability to express him self clearly .in English added to the :onfusion. Heracle was trying to say that the rules of the game stopped the match at midnight, but he unfor tunately said something about mue laws. Big John meant we 1, but he said the wrong thing. Now as to the outcome of the bout. Hanson was returned the winner, but on a fluke. There Is no doubt that he was the aggressor, that he. put? up -'the better fight, and should have been given a decision on points if the referee had elected to give a decision. But m justice to Ellis it must be said that his defeat cannot be charged against him squarely. Hanson might have won, in fact it is more than oroba;bl- that he would have won had there been io interruption, but at the same time Sllis was not in condition to continue he fight when he returned o the rin ifter the, referee had been ovor-ruled. Ellis left, (the rinsr when Heracle stopped the bout. He took the reif ree's to the 'mat. his friends assert. If he did it certainly reauired no jrreat wrestling-skbl to pin him. ! Thursday's misunderstanding robbed i Hanson of aa well-earned victory; j forced .Ellis to a deieat that he did not ; deserve, and caused dissatisfaction all ; around. As to those- wno wanted their j money back, they certainly received j full value for their investment. They j saw wrestling history made. They j saw the longest and fiercest bout ever staged in Wilmington, and more real : wrestling than is uncorked in two j average matches. ! It is to be' hoped that when Ellis j and Hanson face each other Tuesday I night lor the next round of .iheir j sifries, that there will be a distinct j understanding, so mat the .'winner, j which ever he may be, will have nis j triumph unclouded. - Wilmington likes wrestling, it wants wrestling, but it wants to understand every little detail that enters into a match.
