NEW YORK, Feb. 8. We are now at the time when plans for the cutting of rotton acreage are to take concrete form in some sections. In others, meetings are taking place to further the campaign. It is claimed farmers make pledges but have not the will power to keep them in many instances. He world outside of planting sections is more or less counting on this now, believing that many farmers will "let their neighbors do the cutting." . It is with farmers and farmers alone to plan for and determine their own welfare The consuming world can not do this. - They are only consumers. Thev do consume cotton and will con pume it, as the cheapest material ob tainable for clothing, at prices higher than current, if planters reduce the supply to meet the consumption. fThen buvers will be so placed as to hunt for sellers of cotton instead of present-day conditions when farmers seek buyers. It is a plain case of cut your acre age half in, two, voluntarily or hold a larger acreage and cut your own throat. The farmer's salvation was never more thoroughly in his own hands that it is today, and the world will respect his intelligence or ridicule his plight according to his own action this planting time. : ORVIS BROS. & CO. THOUGH BADLY WOUNDED, WOODHAM KILLS NEGRO Alterc&tion Arises Over Col lision of Machines FLORENCE, S. C, Feb. 8. The con dition of Thomas Woodham, Hartsville man who, after being shot four times by a negrd and dangerously wounded, managed to ftre a bullet -which killed his attacker, Is reported at the Flor ence Infirmary as favorable. He is by no means out of danger, however, and It may be several days before it is cer tain that no complications will set in. A number of friends visited Mr. Wood- ham at the infirmary-today. He was -struck -by four bullets, two under the right, arm, a third in the right shoulder with a fourth striking the ehinr Surgeons have not yet probed for the bullets. One Is believed to be Imbedded in the lung tissue. The Wounded man is about fifty years old. "The shooting-'In which Mr. Wood ham wfts wounded and in which Grover Martin, a negro, was killed, occurred Friday evening near Hartsville. It ap pears that after dark Mr. Woodham was in his automobile on the way to Hartsville. Near Lee s cross roads a collision- occurred between Mr. Wood ham's car and a truck driven by the nejcTo. " The truck was headed from Hartsville and the reports are that it carried no lights. There is said to have been another negro man in the truck with Martin, It appears that when the two -cars came together Mr. Woodham alighted and, walking to the truck. questioned Martin as to why he had his hand in "his pocket. Thereupon Martin produced a revolver and com menced firing at Mir. Woodham. Mr Woodham returned the fire, and al though seriously injured, killed the negro. The coroner held an inquest and the finding was that Mr. Wood ham was fully Justiflel. Mr. Woodham was immediately brought to the in firmary here and his Injuries exam ined. They were of such nature, how ever, that the surgeons have not yet been able to probe tor the buuets.-Mr. Woodham is a trustee of the Phila delphia school district in Darlington county and is highly regarded in his community.; Dodson's Liver Tone " Instead of Calomel Calomel is Quicksilver.
