At the an nual .meeting or the stockholders in the Sk-uthport Fish Scrap and -Oil com pany, J. Wesley Dey Tf Xew Jersey was elected president, and C. E. Gause of Southport, vice president and gen eral manager. Following the. business meeting a banquet was enjoyed by the visitors and several citizens of South port. At the annual meeting of the Red Cross here, Eli Cavenaugh was ejected president; Thomas B. Carr, vice presi dent; "Mrs. R. B. Moore, secretary, and S B. Northrop, treasurer. The old offi cers voluntarily retired after serving faithfully during tne -war period. Mrs. Cora O'Quinn, widow of W. C. O'Quinn, passed away Wednesday evening fter a' brief illness, apoplexy being the cause of death. She was born. In Horrv county. S. C. 50 years ago. The family moved here several vears ago and Southport people highly "esteemed the deceased lady for her Christian virtues. She was burled Thursday, Rev. Mr. Boney conducting the service. Dr. O'Quinn. of Norfolk, and Mrs. Percv O. I.een-ett. of South port, are surviving children. t Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mann, of Bal timore, and Mrs. R. S. Ruark. of Wil mington, have been quests or api. j and Mrs. E. H. Adkins. Mrs. Adkins ; has returned from a visit to her son. Elmer Adkins. of Knoxville. Tenn. The department of music. Women's club, with Mrs. U. 1.. Robinson chair man, rendered a very delightful pro gram , Wednesday at the club rooms. Sketches of composers were read. Mrs. Robinson, a cousin or Ethelbert Nevtn, gave most ente'taining reminiscences df the early JTe of this celebrated composer, showing pictures in her pos session. She was rollowed by Miss Parkhill," formerly of Pittsburg who told of her class-mate, Louise Homer. Mrs. Marshall Guthrie and Miss Louise Standland gave beautiful renditions from the artists ntmed. and Miss Es telle Fussell and Mrs. Isaac Davis gave attractive piano numbers. The meet ing was considered one of the most entertaining that has been held and! was well' attended. OR. HAWKINS OLDEST BANK DIRECTOR IN THE COUNTRY RALEIGH. Feh. 14. Dr. A. B. Haw kins, of this city, who celebrated his 96th birthday January 25. besides hav ing been for years the oldest living graduate of the University of North Carolina, the first state university to be established in America, is also prob ably the o'.dest active ba'nk director In in the United States. ' Dr. Hawkins, who is ione of the wealthiest men herehas been a mem ber of the board ofli rectors of one of the largest banks of Raleigh for more than 30 years, during which time he has missed but few of its meetings, always taking an active interest in the direction of the policies of the in stitution. He is now in splendid physical condition, retaining all of his faaiilUes,. In addition to -his bank duties, Dr. Hawkins personally looks after his large real estate and other holdings in this state and in Florida. Born in Franklin county January 25, 1825; Dr. Hawkins graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1845. the same year tht James K. Polk, sh alumnus of this institution, was inaugu rated President of the United States. He completed his, studies at the Jef ferson Medioal college. Philadelphia, Pa., receiving his M. D. degree in 1S47. inus matting nun one ox int uiut-.n alumnus of this college, He practiced medicine in North Carolina for a num ber of years after finishing college and then moved to Florida, but returned to this state about 40 years ago and has since made his home in Raleigh. Dr. Hawkin's wife, who died several years ago,, was the daughter of. Gen. William Bailey, a veteran of the war of 1812 and the Indian Wars in Florida. Allegations have been made to the effect that the real reason for the visit abroad of Crown Prince Hlrohito is due to intrigue withln the court to .bring about a cancellation of the be trotheal of the crown prince to the Princess Nakako, daughter of General Kuni. The household department has Issued an official statement to the ef fect that "rumors seem to be current" concerning the engagement of the crown prince to Princess Nagako, but that the nation should understand that .no change whatsoever is contemplated concerning the marriage contract as already -informally settled. Industrial de velopments reported in eastern Caro lina during the last three days include a new manufacturing plant, improve ments to existing plants undei con templation and some construction worK in the way of new stores and dwellings. Construction of an ice plant at Smith field is scheduled to be started this week. The Holt Oil company Is es tablishing a station at Clinton. Wil lard and Smith opened a cash-and-carry grocery at Washington Satur day, one of a numerous chain of such stores in this section. Quinn-McGowan company, furniture dealers, have oc cupied a new store at Warsaw. "The Standard Oil company is having a wharf built for its agents at Beaufort. The Duplin county commissioners have under consideration a grand jury recommendation for a new jail at Kenansville. Construction of the new North river bridge at Beaufort is to be rushed. The bridge will be ap proximately a mile in length. USUAL WEEK-END FATALITIES ARE REPORTED PROM IRELAND BELFAST, Feb. 14. A number of fatalities occurred In Belfast over the week-end. It was reported today that a military lorry was bomber Satur day night from behind a wall near Booterstown in south Dublin. "The fire was returned," the report said, "and some of hte attackers were seen to fall. The military suffered no casualtities." A double tragedy, evidently con nected with the foregoing, occurred. James Brophy, who, accordin to rela tives, had not quit his house for some time, was shot dead in bed, and John Healy, while walking home, also was shot dead. Unofficial reports assert that an Im portant person was In a private motor car with the lorry which was bombed nnd was the object of the attack but this the police-deny. The motor car with a party of con- stabulary going from Balbriggan to Swords. Dublin county, was ambushed this morning. A constable was wounded. A man wan shot dead near Buttevant. County Cork, and two aux iliary policemen were wounded by bombs thrown into the billiard room of the town hall in Macroom Satur day. . . SENATOR MARTIN MEMORIAL WASHINGTON, Feb. 14. Memorial services were held In the house for the late Senator Thomas Staples Martin, of Virginia, for any years Dem ocrat leader in the senate. Representa tive Montague', formerly governor of Virginia, presided. Speakers Included members of .the Virginia delegations, and others, both IleJubllcHns and Dem ocrats. Senator Martin had never sought nor held public office until elected to the senate in 1833. He was succeeded after his death about a year by Carter Glass, at that time secretary of the treasury.
