'i' On farms averaging 258 acres in size, the tractor has, displaced 2.2 horses, ac cording to an inquiry made by the gov errinpnt in Indiana, Ohio," and Illinois. On these farms the operators kept one head of work stock for leach 28 acres of land hef ore -they bought the trac tors, and afterward they kept one head of work ,stock for each 38: acres,1 omit ting minor fractions. Last yearv it cost 134 to feed horse and therefore the tractor saved about $ 275 worth-of hone feed. .This year it will cost only about $100 to feed a horse. As the ' govern ment '.figures' It, the cost of : plowing wlth' tractors runs a little mor.e than $2 an acre, while the cost of plowing with horses" ran nearly $3 an acre. But these' flguresare offset byrthe fact that it costs'.a: Httle. less to disk, or; to' cut grain, "with "horses. Taken all around .the figures, indicate that there is not a great gain in the matter of econorhy by theuse of tractors The advantage lies in .getting: a larger amounts of work done in addy, during the busyseason and 'in- gettins. perhaps, a better seed bed -bV' the use of the tractor. On the other hand the tractor makes no ma nure for the increase of fertility and furnishes no market, for the feeds raised "on the f arm. : The mat,ter seems to "break, about even betweehithe trac tor ara the horse. Butr we still believe that flie future L lies with power farm ing, lgecauSe the power machine may be expected to become not, only, more enomical, but more efflcient--while the horse has reached the height? of his ef ficiency.
