June 20. Is the tentative program of the convention. The convention will open In the Oceanic hotel pavilion a,t 10 o'clock. June 20. Addresses of welcome will be made by James H. Can an. mayor, on behalf of the city of Wilmington, and by Col. Walker Taylor on behalf of the local board. The response to these addresses will be made by Thomas F. Kidder on yes terday brought to the attention, of the members of the Rotary club the con gested condition of the superior court of New Hanover county dockets, and suggested that it mlght.be possible to have appointed In this county a board of arbitrators, which board would have power to settle without trial numer ous cases that would otherwise con sume much of the court's time. The fact that New York city has a board of arbitrators whose duties are to settle cases of any kind which are of such a nature that they can be ar bitrated outside of court, has led Ro tarian Kidder to believe that such a board could be provided In this county BABIES' HOSPITAL AT SOUND IS NOW OPEN Mrs. A. Water street, was placed under arrest by po lice officials early yesterday afternoon on a charge of stealing 50-pounds of rice, a quantity of cigars and other merchandise from the Busch-Bell con cern. The Babies' hospital at Wrlghtsvllle Sound, an Institution that each sum mer cares for scores of babies "that are sick, opened for tjhe summer Monday.. The hospital is a community under taking, sponsored and directed by the women of Wilmington, with a men's advisory committee, a superintendent of the hospital, who is also chairman of the board of directors; a hospital open to all doctors; and one offering the same treatment to pay and charity patients alike. Mrs. A. O. Ricaud, chairman, of the board of directors. Is superintendent. Miss Isabelle Williams a graduate of Roosevelt 'hospital, who also took graduate work at Dr. x Holt's Babies' hospital. Is the nurse in charge on day duty. Miss Schulken. a graduate of Watta hospital. Is nurse In charge on night duty. Dr. Marlon Keith, of the Maryland hospital. Is Interne. This staff, together with an able corps of assistants, give assurance of oapable and efficient service. Th capacftyof the Babies hospi tal is 30 babies and. 17 mothers. In 1930 a total number of 83 babies were treated; in 1911, about 90. Tear be fore last, the first season, there were 10 charity patients and seven endowed beds; last year there were 15 charity patients and endowed beds. The finance committee Is anxious to have 10 endowed beds for this season, that the number of charity patients may be amply provided for. The num ber of endowed beds last year was not adequate to care for the charity pa tents. The cost of endowing a ted for a season, thus taking care of a sick and needy baby during the different sum mer months. Is 8200. Ten of such beds are really needed. The generosity of the Wilmington public appealed to for the necessary funds. The finance com mittee has expressed its appreciation of the funds that are already begin ning to come In. Jesse F. Roache will accept all contributions, and all such, large or small, will be most gratefully received. . At last night's session or superior court the following cases were dis posed of by Judge E. H. Cranmer: B. B. Phelps, white, store breaking. 18 months; Frank Phelps, white, store brealng, 18 months; John Ferguson, colored, larceny, 15 months; William White, colored, larceny, 12 months, as sault with a deadly weapon, 4 months; Henry Jones, colored, store brealngr.k 18 months; Solomon Mallette, colored, store breaking, 15 months. ' ; L. S. Olive, white, was arraigned on a charge of having violated the state law with regard to the disposition' and handling of tubercular cattle. Prayer for Judgment was continued. FTRJB BURVg JVEGRO AJTD PUT PORD OUT OF COMMISSION Edward Dudley, negro, was painfully burned on the arms and a Ford touring car was practically destroyed by Are last night at 9:30 o'clock when gaso line caught from a lighted lantern which the negro was holding under the machine that he might see to make a connection of a gas pipe. The fire de partment responded to an alarm from 10th and Chestnut streets and extin guished the blaze before the car was completely destroyed. McCormlck, of the Acme Manu facturing company, expects to leave to night for Washington, where he will go to take up with Senator Simmons and the interstate commerce commis sion a request recently made for reten tion of the 10 per cent reduction In railroad rates for watermelon ship pers of North Carolina, which expire under present arrangement on June 80th. Mr. McCormlck brought the matter J to the attention of Senator Simmons sometime ago, pointing to the fact that melons do not begin to move from this state until after June 1 anS therefore if the rates obtained by Florida and Georgia shippers ,re cancelled as of June 1 It will be discriminating against North Carolina growers. Senator Simmons took the matter up with the Interstate commerce com mission and, according- to Information reachnng the city yesterday afternoon, has received Information that effort will be made to retain the present rates.
