modeled Building From
3 To 10 O’Clock
The formal opening of the remodell
ed city hall will be held from 3 to 10
p. m. on Tuesday, February 27,
James E. L. Wade, commissioner
of public works, announced yester
day.
At that time, Wade said, the pub
lic will be invited to inspect the
building and to see the many
changes and improvements.
An open house will be held be
tween these hours and city em
ployes will be in their offices after
8 p. m. to conduct visitors around..
Wade added that this does not
mean that the building is complete
ly finished, although it may be by
that date. The contractor has yet io
give the city written notice that the
contract has been fulfilled and
Wade has not yet accepted the
building for the city.
Wade called attention particular
ly to the improvements to the libr
ary on the third floor, and said "I
sincerely believe the public will be
pleasantly surprised at the beauty
of the new city hail."
Three Southeastern N. C.
Men Enlist In Army Here
Enlistments yesterday at the Wil
mington district office of the army
recruiting- service included three
young men from Southeastern North
Carolina who were assigned to duty
with infantry units in Panama, Ser
geant S. W. D. Bennett, local re
cruiting officer, reported.
They Include: Robert B. Becton,
20, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. P..
Becton, of route four,Clinton; Stacy
L. Batchelor, 19, whose guardian ia
James M, Batchelor, of route one,
Richlands; and William F. King.
19, son of Mr. and Mrs. James E.
King, of 1410 Castle street.
They were transferred to the
army recruit training center at
Fort Moultrie, S. C., for preliminary
training prior to assignment to
their overseas posts for three years
of service.
Chautemps Says France
Will Not Fail Finland
PARIS. Feb. 22.—UP)—France will
not fail in her duty to embattled
Finland, which “has astonished the
world" by her resistance to Soviet
Russia, Camille Chautemps, vice-pru
mier of France, said tonight in a
Washington day dinner speech be
fore the American club.
“Finland,” he said, “has proved
the almost invincible force of a proud
and courageous people who do not
wish to die.”
His audience included the Finnish
minister to Paris and Czech and Pol
ish representatives.
