Cabbage, Lettuce, Green Peas,
Berries Are Weaker On
Northern Markets
RALEIGH, May 15.—W)—German
notaries in Europe have sent prices
of North Carolina farm products
down, A. B. Harless of the depart
ment of agriculture market division
said today.
This state’s cabbage, lettuce,
green peas and strawberries were
weaker on northern markets today,
Harless said.
In Philadelphia, cabbage lost 25
cents a one and one-half bushel
hamper; lettuce fell 10 to 25 cents
a five-peck hamper; green peas
dropped 15 to 35 cents a bushel;
and strawberries receded 50 cents
to $1 a crate.
Also, strawberry prices fell on
North Carolina auction markets.
Twenty-four quart crates of the best
quality were 25 to 30 cents lower
at Burgaw, 60 to 65 cents lower at
Chadbourn and 35 to 50 cents lower
in Wallace, but prices at Mt. Olive
held “fairly steady.”
Tar Heel hogs, fed steers and
yearlings dropped 25 to 40 cents a
hundred pounds, and butter fell
one-half to one and one-half cents
a pound.
Woolvin Building Donated
To Social Center Group
The Woolvin building, 223 Princess
treet has been donated to a group of
young Wilmingtonians interested in
the formation of a social center for
the youth of the city, through the
Efforts of owners and J. E. L. “Wade.
The section of the building occu
pied by the police department while
the old city hall was being remodeled
will be used as will a part of the
third floor, the purpose of which will
>e storage of equipment.
The space will be for dances, par
ties and any other functions desired
by its users.

at 92.1. The index, which is de

Extension Of Conflict
To Aid Steel Industry
NEW YORK, May 15—W—Exten
sion of the European war to Hol
land and Belgium promises to
bring immediate demand for in
creased United States Steel, “Iron
Age” said today in its weekly re
view of the industry.
“Great Britain,” the review said,
“probably cut off from supplies of
steel from Belgium, upon which
she depends to a considerable ex
tent, will look to the United States
to make up the deficiency. Inquir
ies for about 100,000 tons are being
quoted on and others are expected
to follow shortly. France is inquir
ing for shell steel, of which a large
quantity may be bought as soon a-'
complications arising from very
rigid specifications are straighten
ed out. Britain is expected to hurry
the placing of additional shell and
other munitions contracts tha'
have been under negotiation here.
... It is estimated that about 4,
500,000 tons of steel a year previ
ously sold by Belgium in world
markets may be added to Ameri
can sales, which would approxi
mately double the volume of re
cent months.”

German Dentists Schooled To
Use Resin For Gold And
Other Metals
BERLIN, May 15 —WV- Ger
man dentists are being schooled
in the use of artificial resin to re
place gold and other precious me
tals generally used in dental work.
This statement was made by the
Reich’s dentist leader, Fritz Blum
enstein, at a meeting of dentists
of Lower Saxony.
Blumenstein advocated the use
of artificial resin as material for
aritficial teeth. Made completely
from German raw materials, ar
tificial resin has great advantages
as compared with metals, espe
cially the gold used heretofore,
Blumenstein claimed. These facts,
he said, have been proven by
thorough practical tests conduct
ed for more than a year.
The question of using artificial
resin generally in dental work
will be approached after training
of all dentists in the use of this
new material has been concluded,
he predicted.
Scarcity of precious metals in
present-day Germany often hand
icapped dentists in their work.
Patients in need of bridge work
requiring gold were oftgn turned
away if they could not produce
the quantity of gold needed. In
numerous cases golden rings or
other articles of gold were sacri
ficed for dental use.
PLEAD INNOCENT
CLEVELAND, May 15.—CP)—In
nocent pleas were entered in federal
court today for 94 defendants listed
in the government’s anti-trust indict
ment against the plumbing industry.
Seven others signified intentions to
file demurrers and were not required
to plead. Former Gov. Walter J.
Kohler, of Wisconsin, another de
fendant, died since the indictment
was returned.

vanis club luncheon meeting yester
lay.
A demonstration unit was installed
n the ballroom of the Cape Fear
hotel and following luncheon Norris
Russell of Charlotte, demonstration
aide of the operating company, in
troduced by J. Ft- Thomas, Wilming
ton manager, explained and demon
strated its intricate mechanism and
accurate functioning.
As the device is as complex as it
is efficient, it would be difficult to

Loving Believes WPA
Decreases Employment
WASHINGTON, May 15— UPl —
Harry W. Loving of Charlotte,
N. C., executive secretary of the
Carolinas branch, Associated Gen
eral Contractors, says he believes
the WPA decreases employment
rather than adds to it.
He so remarked before a house
appropriations committee consid
ering the next WPA appropriation.
Loving said many contractors in
North Carolina had been forced to
decrease the number of their em
ployes because work they ordin
airly would do was being done by |
the WPA.
•‘This condition is attributable in
part to the fact that WPA has built,
according to press reports, 7,827
miles of highways, 822 miles of
streets, 298 miles of sidewalks, 291
miles of curbs and gutters and 10
airports in North Carolina,” Lov
ing said.
