Read The Classified Ads MD FORCES TAKE GOOD WHEAT CROf -— v Large Part Of Balkan Area Faces Food Shortage As Result Of Invasion BUDAPEST, June 30—OP)—Rus sia seized the only bumper croj of wheat and corn in the Balkar area by occupying Bessarabia, anc the rest of the region faces a pre carious food situation this winter Late frosts followed by torrentia rains and floods reduced this year’s yield of wheat and corn ir Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and old Rumania by an estimatec 33 percent. Only in Bessarabia are flourish ing crops reported. Harvesting throughout the rest ol the Balkans is about two weeks late already. After late frosts punished the winter wheat, Balkan farmers pul their hopes in spring wheat and corn only to have endless rains hamper sowing activities in many places. At present the crop is in danger of mildew. Fruit crops also were badly dam aged by hail. It was pointed out Germany had placed large contracts in Bessa rabia for vegetable oil seeds. Prevailing crop conditions are expected to result in a serious food situation to the Balkans, especially if exports to Germany must be continued on the old level. Most of the Balkan countries now are using only dark bread. 1 ‘Christian Sciencey Is Topic Of Lesson-Sermon “Christian Science” was the sub ject of the lesson-sermon in all Christian Science churches and so cieties, yesterday. The Golden Text was from II Peter 1:21. "The prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Among the citations which com prised the lesson-sermon were the following from the Bible, “Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. . . I am come a light into the world, that whoso ever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. . . If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” (John 12:44, 46. John 14:15, 16.) The lesson-sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, “Sci ence and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” by Mary Baker Ed dy. “The term Christian Science was introduced by the author to designate the scientific system of divine healing. The revelation con sists of two parts: 1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind healing, through a spiritual sense of the Scriptures and through the teachings of the Comforter, as pro mised by the Master. 2. The proof, by present demonstration, that the so-called miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to a dispensation now ended, but that they illus trated an ever-operative divine Principle. The operation of this Principle indicates the eternality of the scientific order and contin uity of being. Christian Science dif fers from material science, but not on that account is it less cien tific. On the contrary, Christian Science is pre-eminently scientific, being based on Truth, the Princi ple of all science.” (Page 123) 1 HAPPINESS, C. 0. D. (Continued From Page Eight) had been recently revived, so she plunged into its lively tempo— “Come on and hear, Come on and hear, Alexander’s Ragtime band!” The singing began instantly be cause the other youths knew it. Even old Mr. Merrifield knew it, but from an earlier day. The piano was out of tune, the harmony was faulty, but the pleasure was high. Jeremy Tucker came down the winding staircase onto this scene of genuine gaiety, stood looking at the group with a certain awe. Five minutes later they were all at table. Each stood respectfully, waiting for Mr. Merrifield to sit down first, but instead he lifted his fine old white head upward and closed his eyes. “God in Heaven,” he prayed, "1 am a fool at times. But even in such a case it will be essential for the Americas to present a united front in re-establishing world trade on a sensible basis, so that the hungry of Europe can be fed without ruin ing the new world.” The secretary said that "follow ing the strategy he has used in Europe,” Hitler will want us in this hemisphere to think of each other as bitter competitors—not as neighbors who are capable of pre senting a united front to a solid Europe under his control.” "If exports from country after country in the new world shrank toward zero, threatening farmers and businessmen alike, Hitler would have his chance to stir up dissension within this hemi sphere,” Wallace said. "He could step forward and play one country against another with offers for surplus goods. Later on, after these offers were accepted, he could threaten to withdraw that trade unless he got economic and political concessions. “Those who supported him would get the business; those who refused probably would find their export markets closed. Thus, Hit ler might easily dominate both North and South America.” 1 State Health Officer Makes Plea For Safe, Sane Fourth RALEIGH, June 30.—(£>)—"Save your powder for preparedness. If you must shoot, wait until there is something to shoot at.” That weis the plea for a “safe and sane Fourth of July,” made today by State F alth Officer Carl V. Reynolds. He added: “Why run the risk of self-mutilation and injury to yourself, to say nothing of the annoyance you cause others, includ ing babies and small children, the sick and the convalescent, the aged and persons in hospitals, by the foolish handling of explosives and fireworks, which every year take a tremendous toll of lives and prop erty? “Money spent on dangerous nui sances such as fireworks is money wasted. Why not contribute it to the Red Cross, or to some other helpful agency, instead of burning it up and, thereby, creating a nui-1 sance and setting up a hazard? “Now, as never before, our people should school themselves in caution and discipline, and there is no bet ter time to practice this restraint Make me worthy of the pleasure brought to me this day. Share the pleasure with these young people. Bless them. Oh, bless them, God of us all. Amen!” They sat down, and Gayle Dixon looked quickly at Bill Bailey. Strangely, she caught his eye, and she observed that he, too, was hav in trouble with a lump in his throat. 1 (To Be Continued) than during the Fourth of July sea son. “There are many forms of amuse ment and recreation which are not only free from risks of any sort but which are beneficial and should be engaged in at every opportunity. It is not necessary to enumerate these, but to every North Carolinian let me say: Be sure you see a safe re turn ahead from any Fourth of July diversion in which you might wish to engage. "July, 1939, was marked by 33 accidental drownings in North Caro lina, which was a dozen more than the 21 reported in July of the pre vious year. In 1937, there were 25 and in 1936 the July total was 29. “It would be well for holiday so journers at beaches and on lake sides and riversides to remember these figures and seek to prevent a recurrence this year of .the high to tal that marked last July. "Make it a safe and sane ‘Fourth’ in fact as well as theory." -%_ RED CROSS APPEAL BUCHAREST, June 30.—(IP)—The Rumanian Red Cross appealed to night to the Soviet Red Cross to safeguard two new tuberculosis sanitariums in Bessaragia, and to provide care for 200 patients, some described as critically ill.
