CLASSIFIED DISPLAY “A Cat May Look At A Queen” "Pussy cat, pussy cat, where have you been? I’ve been to London, to visit the Quern." Mother Goose’s old rhyme was prophetic of the meeting pictured above, where Queen Elizabeth stopped to pet a cat—and a black cat at that—as her majesty entered an air raid shelter. She and the king were inspecting bomb-blasted South Iamdon when siren’s warning forced them to take cover. LOVE WITHOUT MUSIC (Continued from Page Terl) take. Could anyone have wanted your life?” At that moment Linda had stooped to pick up a fallen hand kerchief. She thought it was her own until she caught that whiff of scent, exotic, beguiling, and, yes, treacherous. She turned the linen square around, searching for an initial. Yes, there was one. 2 'To Be Continued) ATTACK VALUATION MEXICO CITY, Sept. 18.—W)— Seven of the smaller companies affiliated with Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey today attacked in the court the Mexican government’s valuation of their expropriated properties. 2 An Englishwoman, L o u ise M. Crawford, wrote one of the most popular of Irish poems: Kathleen Mavourneen.” LITTLEJOHN CASE HEARING STARTED Two Charlotte Policemen Tes tify Against Suspended Cap tain Of Detectives CHARLOTTE, Sept. 18— iff* — Two Charlotte policemen testied against Frank N. Littlejohn, sus pended captain of detectives, as the City Civil Service commission began a hearing today upon a ser ies of charges filed against the de tective ny Police Chief E. J. No lan. W. C. Timmons, Jr., a plain clothesman, told the three com missioners Littlejohn had threaten ed, to the accompaniment of vig orous profanity, to “shoot a hole” through B. H. Finlayson, another policemen, if the latter did not keep “his nose out of pay busi ness’’. One of the formal charges against the veteran detective was this alleged threat to kill Finlay son. Finlayson, the next witness, test ified he had asked Littlejohn about the alleged remark, after Timmons had informed him of it. The detective told him, he said, that it had reference to a report that the officer had made a tele phone call to a woman in “check ing up on Littlejohn.’ When he told Littlejohn that he had made so such call, he con tinued, the detective replied that ir, that case* “everything was all right’,’ and they shook hands. Finlayson also testified that he had difficulty in obtaining his share of a reward offered by the state of Georgia for the capture of an escaped prisoner in. 1938, but eventually got the money, $25. Nolan had charged Littlejohn with attempting to keep Finlayson from getting his share of the re ward. 4 STUDY OF INDUSTRIAL ASSETS IS ANNOUNCED Data Collected in National Sur vey May Be Used In The Defense Program NEW YORK, Sept. 18—UP)—A sur vey of the nation’s industrial assets for possible use in the defense pro gram was announced tonight by H. He disclosed plans for the factory inventory in a speech prepared for delivery before a New York region al meeting of manufacturers. Back-1 o-Marriage I rendAmong Girls Is Noted By St. Johns BY ADELA ROGERS ST. JOHNS Good news. Big good news. The best I’ve heard in a long time. There’s a back-to-marriage trend among American girls that amounts to a tidal • ve. There's a reaction away from careers, and from jobs, and a clean-cut and definite idea freely expressed by Junior League debutantes, college girls and the backbone-of-the-na tion girls that marriage husband and children, plus the budget, are plenty enough career for any wo man. Now all this, though it didn’t seep through right at first, has to Jo with divorce. And since the per :entage of American divorces has seen mounting until it’s worried most thinking people, it has to ae good news that this new move ment is pretty sure to cut down ;hat startling percentage. There is a lot more to this di vorce business than meets the eye. When I came to Hollywood, 1 rad a sort of general confused dea about divorce. Too bad there vere so many matrimonial wrecks. Something ought to be done about t. On the other hand, after all, iivorce was part of the modern :ra, and maybe if people weren’t tappy they’d better get a divorce —something to be said on both sides of the question. Then they hired me at Para mount to write a story called ‘1 Afant A Divorce”. Off hand, it, ooked like a simple assignment. Divorce stories grew on e v e ry ’ront page. All you had to do was rluck one and change it around a ittle and—and—it didn’t work. Because I discovered that di vorce was a deep, heartbreaking :isychological problem, tied fast to he structure of human happiness, twined and twisted into so many important human relations, fam ily problems, health, religion, bus iness and every other kind of thing that can happen to men and wo men. While I was studying, reading, researching, I ran smack into two amazing points. They interested me iso much that I thought I’d pass ’em on to you. First, the increase of divorce, has been in direct proportion to woman’s abandonment of home, and marriage as her first interest in life. It isn’t only that careers for women have added a great and complex new cause for divorce It is that girls were trained to think of marriage as a sort of catch-as-catch can affair that would more or less take care of itself while they pursued a thou- * sand other hobbies, needs, jobs, self-expressions, careers, pleasure and what-have-you. The second thing I discovered, after profound investigation, was that most divorces happen when the divorce-seekers are very very young. Wait a minute — what I mean is that the things which do cause divorce when you are grown are the characteristics allowed to run riot in childhood. It’s little things that bring on divorce—but the little things are indicative of big inner troubles, and misunderstandings and ehould be treated as warnings. Right now, I’m trying to save the marriage in my story “I Want A Divorce.” A marriage like yours —and mine. Hope I succeed. * * * The screen version of “I Want A Divorce” will be presented at the Carolina Theatre starting Mon day._2 ItCanBeDone!
