POSTOFFICE WORK HELD UP BY U. S Scotland Neck Project Amonj Those On Which Plans Have Been Deferred WASHINGTON, Dec. 19- - The government is holding up con struction of approximately 20C postoffices and other public build ings in line with President Roose velt’s decision to curtail non-de fense expenditures. Officials of the public buildings administration said the halt in con struction resulted directly from a presidential order impounding funds intended for PWA works out side the District of Columbia. The officials added that the proj ects on which construction was be ing deferred were those on which no bids had been asked and no construction work had actually started. Among them were: North Carolina—Scotland Neck postoffice, $70,000. South Carolina—Charleston post office, $465,000; Columbia postof fice, additional land, extension and remodeling, $400,000; Fort Mill postoffice, $70,000; Lyman postof fice, $70,000; Manning postoffice. $75,000. Oh Winds Of Song (Continued From Page Ten) Nana Harris, “At least I won’t be recognized here and asked to make a speech.”) Kit skipped her gaze from the girl in the sable coat and saw that row upon row of shining faces were turned up to the stage, each face a mirror of youthful anticipa tion. Overhead, partially concealing ; the water stains on the ceiling, festoons of orange and black crepe paper, left over from Halowe’en, twined and met in the center from which was suspended a large red paper bell, making a neat meeting of memory with the coming Christ mas holidays. At the foot of the small stage, mounds of also left over corn stalks flanked a table on which reposed the trophies to be distributed by Nana Harris. They were three cromium plated cups of varying sizes, a pair of boxing gloves, a brace of ice skates and an autographed football. Amateur stagehands were set ting the scene for the girls’ act. They placed a white bench against a painted drop showing a portion of an extravagant garden purport ed to supply the illusion of a south ern garden. Fran already had pcsed herself on the bench and was arranging her cretonne skirts when Kit took her place, standing back of her with one hand resting on her shoul der and the other fingering the ribbons of her hat. Fran nodded to the amateur stagehand to give a cue to the or chestra leader. The curtain was going up. The fates were picking up the strands of destiny that were marked for Kitty Reilly. 1 To (Be Continued) Puppet Classes Will Present Yule Play The puppet classes of the Wil mington Museum of Art will pre sent a Christmas play, "The Lost Toys,” this ofternoon, at 4 o’clock, at the Museum. The public is cordially invited and there will be no admission charge. There will be a party immed iately after the ply, for the chil dren of the classes. AAA Asked To Exempt Tickling’ Cucumbers R. W. Galphin, farm agent, yes terday received word from E. Y. Floyd, secretary of the state AAA committee, that two different pickle manufacturers have re quested the committee to exempt pickling cucumbers from com mercial vegetable allotments. Representatives of the trade have insisted, the notice said, that the pickling varieties of cu cumbers do not enter into compe tition with the green cucumber market. If the exemption is made, it will be necessary to reduce the portion of commercial vegetable allotment that was built up from the pickling of varieties of cu cumbers. Galphin requests that all farm families in New Hanover county contact the customhouse office by Saturday afternoon and say wheth er they want the pickling cucum ber placed on the free list. The final decision will not be made by the state committee until the answers from tne various counties are turned in December 23. LEGISLATION PASSED WASHINGTON, Dec. 19— UP) — Legislation permitting Dr. Max von der Porten to reside perman ently in this country was passed unanimously by the house today after the chamber was told he would face a “Hitler firing squad” if he returned to Germany. Schools Close Today For Yule Holidays The New Hanover county schools will close at noon to day for the Christmas holidays, H. M. Roland, superintendent, • said yesterday. Classes will be resumed at the regular hour at each school Thursday morning, January 2, for the approximately 10,000 children in the 25 white and colored county school units, he said. MOVING?
