Bride-Elect Of This Week Complimented Miss Helen Nichols Honored By Mrs. Baggett And Mrs. Hunt ,jrs a. E. Baggett and Mrs. G. P ’ Hunt entertained at the home i the latter Saturday afternoon honoring Miss Helen Nichols, bride-elect cf this week, at a lin en shower. Games were played during the afternoon after which the hostess served refreshments. Miss Nichols received many lovely pi ces of linen. Love, Jr. * * * PINELAND AND EMI WILL OPEN MONDAY FOR SUMMER SESSION — — ■ ■ SALEMEURG, June 3.—Summer school at Pineland college and Ed wards Military Institute in Salem burg "ill begin cn Monday, June 9, atSa. m. All students who have not vet registered are urged to report to the registrar's office as early as possible after tbe opening hour on Monday. The session will last 60 days, divided into two semesters of 30 days each, the first ending on July 12, the second on August 16, and controlled by the state and na tional regulations for hours and subjects in summer schools. Be sides the regular literary and musi cal courses of the high school and junior college departments, tbe business college will offer the full number of courses given in the regular session, which covers a two year course. Standard high school and junior college courses will be stressed. Students wishing to give special time and study to music will have op portunity to do so under the best and most painstaking instruction. Annie Kate White school for little girls will be open as a summer camp, but those who wish to carry on a lesson course also will be given the desired work. The same is true of the junior barracks for younger boys. For both of these schools rec reation and play will be planned to keep the children interested and busy, except in rest periods. Enrollment preceding the opening has been unusual in each depart ment. * * * CATLETT SCHOOL ANNOUNCES AWARDS The Washington Catlett school has mnounced the following students made perfect attendance records for the past school year: Bernice Wal ter. Vernon Hewett, John Walker, lack Potter, Margie Watts, Jose phine Hollemon, Marion Warlick, Doris Evans. David Carter, Rosa Lee Potter, Robert Coleman and Roscoe Batton. The L. M. Pollock medals lor the boy and girl having made die most improvement during the fear went to Roy Batten and Rachel Packer. Winter Park Circle Will Sponsor Tea The Business Girl’s circle of Winter Park Presbyterian church will have a silver tea in the Lo rnan’s Japanese Iris garden at Audubon Saturday afternoon, June 7, from 3 to 6 o’clock. This is an annual event which is looked forward to each year by all flower lovers. This garden is the only Japanese Iris garden in this section of the state and the tea each year is attended by garden enthusiasts from all over North Carolina. The public is cordially invited to attend and the girls are look ing forward this year to welcom ing to the garden all the newcom ers in the city as well as their old friends. The garden is located at the Lo man home on Audubon boulevard and signs will be placed on both Wrightsville Beach highways, di recting visitors to the garden. * * * MISS BOONE WILL WED DR. BRUBACH FRIDAY AFTERNOON Plans for the wedding of Miss Evelyn Boone and Dr. William Keeper Brumbach, which is to take place Friday afternoon, June 6, at 5 o’clock at the home of the bride elect’s sister, Mrs. W. M. Robbins in Audubon, will be of interest to friends in the city. Miss Boone will have as her only attendant, her sister, Mrs. W. M. Robbins. Dr. Brumbach will be at tended by his brother, Lim Brum bach, of Belleville, N. J. The bride will be given in marriage by her brother-in-law, W. M. Robbins. Rev. Sankey Lee Blanton, pastor of the First Baptist church, will officiate at the ceremony. * * * REV. MANSON NAMED ASSISTANT PASTOR OF CHURCH HERE The Rev. W. T. Manson, Jr., has arrived to be the assistant pastor of the First Presbyterian church and is occupying the manse at 315 Orange street. Mr. Manson has had splendid training and expenience for this work, having been graduated from Davidson college in 1937 and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va„ in 1941, and was engaged as student pastor for some two years during his course of training. Mr. Manson will give special attention in an endeavor to help the church to function healthful and practical for the soldiers in the camps. * * * FOREST HILLS FINAL EXERCISES ARE HELD The commencement exercises of the Forest Hills school were held Saturday morning in the school auditorium. Graham Barefoot, of the seventh grade, announced the program which opened with the flag salute followed by the 23rd psalm and the Lord’s Prayer. The Glee club sang a group of songs. Miss VonGlahn presented *hf- n t tendance certificates and Miss Mc Donald the ribbons won at the track meet, followed by a group of songs sung by members of the seventh grade. William G. Robertson presented the Funderburg Memorial scholar ship cup to Miss Betty Hanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Han son, who had the highest average for the year’s work. As a parting gift the class presented a brass flag stand to the school. The pre^fcita ' tion was made by Betty Hanson and 1 was accepted by Dick Hanson, Club Clock The Castle Haynes Service club will meet Friday, June 6, at 8 o’clock at the clubhouse. A full attendance is required. There will be a meeting of the board of managers pf the North Carolina Society of Colonial Dames of America at the assem bly rooms of the society, at 10:30 o’clock. The Carolina Beach Home Demonstration club will hold its regular meeting Thursday eve ning, June 5, at 2:30 o’clock, at the home of Mrs. W. W. Way. All members are asked to be present. Mrs. Porter Wagstaff will be joint hostess. Cii'cle One of the Fourth Street Advent Christian church will meet Thursday evening at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs. G. G. The Dorcas society of St. Paul’s Lutheran church will meet in the church on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. This will be the last meeting of the socie ty until next fall. The W. H. and F. M. Society of the Sixth Street Advent Christian church will hold its monthly social meeting this evening at 8 o'clock at the home of Mrs. R. S. Thorpe, 722 South Fourth street. Honor Student Receiving high honors at the 4»tn annual commencement exercises at Woman’s college of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro Monday was Miss Johanna Boet, of Castle Hayne, a member of the graduating class. Miss Boet, a Phi Beta Kappa stu dent, is co-winner of the Weil Fel lowship, established by Mrs. Henry Weil of Goldsboro in honor of her late husband, and going annually to graduates with high scholastic achievements for further study at the institution of the recipient s choice. Washburn, general chairman of the benefit staged by the British War Relief Society, has expressed appreciation to the follow ing members of committees for work ing so splendidly to make the Cale donia Market a success. Much credit is due the flower com mittee for its attractive and unusual display of flowers and potted plants that were sold in the old boat house, transformed into an attractive flow er shop. The roof of the old house was thatched with hay and long sprays of climbing roses were train ed on trellises making a most suit able background for the display of flowers.
