War Department Asks Bids on Dredging Job Sealed bids in duplicate will be received until noon, Tuesday, July 22, and then opened, for furnishing labor and materials and perform ance of work of dredging 270,000 cubic yards of material from Man teo to Oregon inlet, according to an invitation for bids issued yesterday by the War department, United States engineer office, at Wilming ton. Manteo Bay (or Shallowbag Hay), formed by a natural indentation of the shore line, is situated on the northeastern side of Roanoke Island. Oregon inlet connects Pamlico Sound wdth the Atlantic ocean, 13% miles south of Manteo Bay. It will provide a channel 100 feet wide from the existing channel south through Roanoke and Pamlico Sounds to Oregon Inlet. The aggre gate length of channels to be dredg ed is approximately 25,000 feet. Minimum hourly wage rates de termined by the department of labor for the work include: Deckhand, dredge, 40 cents; deckhand, tug, 50; motorboat operator, 60: fireman, 50; labore-, 40; leverman, $1; and oiler, 60.
