freighter hits SUB OFF COAST (Continued from Page One) \aw today occurred in mid-after noon “several days ago,” the Navy said. The freighter was making her wav cautiously down the coast 1)en the master sighted a peris cove rippling through the water about two miles away. A quick order put the gun crew n the alert. The skipper maneu vered for the most favorable posi tion for his ship, bringing it around so the sub was off to starboard. it was not long before the sharp watch of the gun crew was re warded when the sub’s conning tower broke through the surface •bout a mile away. There was moment of careful aim and a single shot rang out. Where the conning tower had ap peared there was ‘‘a great upheav al of water.” the Navy said, and the little freighter was shaken by a heavy explosion. A slick of black oil often the last evidence of a submarine on its death plunge, spread over the water. Fifty hours before this encounter the same small freighter had come safely through another incident which may have involved a sub marine. The freighter was about two hours away from the still burning wreckage of a tanker when lookouts spotted a single light blinking about eight feet above the surface to port. The gun crew’s commanding of ficer apparently was taking no chances with submarine traps. He ordered his men to shoot first and investigate later. Two shells were fired, one high, and one to port. The blinking light went out. -V Columbus County Plans Campaign To Sell War Bonds AVHITEVILLE, April 30—At a meeting attended by 60 persons from sections of Columbus county plans were laid last night by the county war savings committee for a drive for the sale of bonds in this area. Half a dozen other members pleaded against the move to table the bill, arguing that it could be “perfected” by amendments and study. But Rep. Bradley (D.-Pa.), who offered the motion, declared ‘I’m as anxious as anyone else to con sider profit limitation, but as a separate bill — not one muddled with other controversial issues.” And Rep. Izac (D.-Calif.) declar ed that approval of the bill would constitute a slap in the face for President Roosevelt,” while Rep. Shannon vD.-Mo.) shouted: ‘‘I don’t want the laboring man crucified on false issues.” Reps. Maas (R.-Minn.), Mott (R. Ore.), and Bates (R.-Mass.) were among those joining with Vinson in the effort to keep the bill off the table.
