Bryan __ Would Bar Women For Combat Duty In Armed Forces WASHINGTON, May 3.— CP) — Controversy over terms of legisla tion to create female branches of the Army, Navy and Marines developed today with a demand by Chairman Walsh (D.-Mass.) of the Senate Naval Affairs committee for an amendment to eliminate from a House-approved bill the possibility that women might be called for com bat duty. Walsh wrote the Navy depart ment that he and most members of the committee “entertain great ap prehensions as to the wisdom of enactment” of a measure passed by the House April 16 setting -up a Women’s Reserve Corps for the Navy and Marines. The committee chairman complain ed that the effect of this measure would be that “every stenographer, typist and file clerk in the Navy shore establishment could be en rolled in the Naval service, women could be promoted up to and includ ing the rank of captain in unlimited numbers without further Congres sional authority and, if the depart ment so desired, they could be as signed to overseas duty or on board vessels of the Navy.” The bill would permit the enlist ment of women on the same basis as men naval reserves, with the same rank and benefits. A similar proposal, made by Senator Thomas (D.-Utah) for a Women’s Army Re serve, was sent back to the military affairs committee last week by the Senate. I'vi'embers said Walsh would express his views before the latter commit tee in a closed session Monday on the Army bill and indicated it was likely that efforts would be made to combine the measures. -V Camp Davis Units Will Go On Range Army authorities again w a m that all ranges used by Camp Da vis units will be occupied by or ganizations firing during the week of May 4.
