This action followed the slump in prices which were effective last Thursday afternoon. The farmers voted to request the secretary of agriculture to place in operation an acreage control program on strawberries produced in the U. The resolutions were passed after the farmers had heard Donald Matheson, of the division markets U. S. D. A., explain the market situation, and how prices in Chadbourn and Tabor City compare with prices on the north ern markets. They also heard Ralph S. Headley of the same division explain to them the prop osition offered by lend-lease pur chase of strawberries. The farmers at the meeting point e d out that it actually costs them at the present time $1.50 to $2.00 per crate for the actual expenses of picking, grading ahd hauling their strawberries to market and receiving less than $2.00 per crate as many farmers were results in an actual loss of money to the strawberry grower. The district assembly, consisting of the recently-elected presidents and secretaries of the clubs in the district, convened at the start of the meeting with District Governor Thomas R. Hood of Dunn presid ing, and received advice and In struction in their duties. Lawrence Akers of Memphis, Tenn., a member of the board of directors of Rotary International, addressed the luncheon session on "the four lanes of Rotary.'* Soldiers from Fort Bragg enter tained at the dinner session, and their program was followed by ad dresses by Henry R.
