Grimes Wed In New Bern Ceremony Solemnized Satur day Evening At First Presbyterian Church NEW BERN, May 16.—In an im pressive ceremony here tonight at 8 o clock at the First Presbyterian church, Miss Margaret Edna Whitehurst became the bride cf Ensign Alan Pendleton Gr i m es, U.S.N.R., of Staten Island, N. Y. The pastor, the Rev. R. E. Mc Clure, officiated. The wedding music was played by Miss Josephine Lowrance, or ganist, of Salisbury, cousin of the bride. Ushers were Branch Whitehurst of Greensboro, cousin of the bride Billy Hand of New Bern, Albert Ellis of Jacksonville and Paul Comer of Chapel Hill. Ensign Wil lard M. Grimes, Jr., of Staten Island, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Miss Mary Turner Willis, of New Bern, was maid-of-honor. The bride was given in mar riage by her father, R. E. Wh;te hurst. She wore white duchess sa tin, made princess style, with pearl embroidery at the shoulder, a long train and fingertip veil outlined with lilies of the valley. Her shower bouquet was of bridal roses. After the ceremony, the bride’s Ketchum of Mount Holly, party for 40 guests at the Trent Pines club. The couple then left by motor for Rocky Mount and will continue by airplane to Chicago, where they will make their home. A native New Bernian, the bride was graduated from Woman’s col lege, Greensboro, then did grad uate work at the University ol North Carolina, Chapel Hill. For a year she was connected with the University Press. She was given many pre-nuptial social courtesies here. Ensign Grimes is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard M. Grimes, Sr., of Staten Island. He received an A. B. degree from the University of North Carolina and was study ing for a Ph.D. degree there when appointed a midshipman in t h e Navy. For the past four months he has been at the Naval Training school at Chicago, and was com missioned there this week as an ensign. He has been ordered to immediate duty as an instructor in the school. 4 * * * Sunset Students Take Part In Annual Play The pupils of the Sixth grade of the Sunset Park school presented their annual May . program with a play at the school recently. Va., was solemnized Et St. Paul’s Lutheran church Sat urday noon. May 9. The Rev. Walter B. Freed, pas tor of the church, officiated at the wedding. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Holt Fairfield White of Wilmington. She wore for her wedding a gown of shell pink mous seline de soi with matching hat and carried a bouquet of mixed spring flowers. Henry Goode of Winchester, Va., attended the bridegroom as best man, and ushers were Gene Mac Watty of Wilmington, Chester A. Bergey of Richmond, Va., Conrad Jones of Washington, D. C., Wil liam Tomz of Wilmington, and W L. Burkheimer, also of Wilming ton. Immediately following the cere mony a reception was given at the Governor Dudley, South Front street. Mrs. White, mother of the bride, wore a frock of light blue with navy accessories and a corsage of pink rosebuds. Following the reception the cou ple left for a wedding trip north. Mrs. Dent changed to a navy blue suit with navy and white acces sories. Following their wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Dent will reside in Winchester, Va. MRS. Tinga In Home Ceremony Wedding Solemnized Wednes day Evening Before Mem bers Of Families, Friends Miss Mary Evelyn Slocum be came the bride of Lieut. Idsard John Tinga in an impressive simple ceremony Wednesday eve ning. May 13, before members of the family and a few close friends, at the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs. Robert B. Slocum, 2525 Mar ket street. The house was charmingly dec orated throughout with spring flow ers and lighted tapers. The bride was met at the foot of the stairs by the bridegroom. They entered the library together and said their vows before an im provised altar amid banked palms, cala lilies and branched candelabra. Miss Beth Slocum, sister of the br:de. attended as maid-of-honor. Mr. Tinga, the father of the bride groom, acted as best man. The bride was lovely in a gown of ivory satin fashioned with a sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice. Chappell Wed At St. Mary’s Catholic Church Scene Of Wedding Friday Afternoon At 5:30 O’Clock St. Marys’ Pro-Cathedrai was the setting for a simple but lovely wedding when Viola Matilda Smith and Robert Paul Chappell, lieuten ant, Army of the United States, were united in marriage by the Rev. J. Tevlin on Friday, May 15, pt 5:30 o’clock in the after noon. The bride and bridegroom enter ed the church together and the vows were spoken before the al tar rail, with the double ring cere mony being used. White peonies were used on the altar. Mrs. Chappell had as her maid of-honor and only attendant, Miss Anne Loper of Wilmington, who was attired in a gown of pale blue silk jersey made %Vh round neckline and gathered skirt. Her hat was a navy blue bonnet and her accessories were also of navy blue. She wore a corsage of talis man roses and yellow daisies. The bride wore an ensemble of turf brown wool and pale blue silk jersey. The short jacket was of turf brown made witli round neck line and covered buttons of turf and blue, while from the pockets were appliqued small rose and blue flowers. The skirt of blue silk jer sey was gathered at the waistline. She wore an off-the-face model of turf brown straw with matching veil and accesories of the same shade. She carried a small satin bound prayer book with a cluster of sweetheart roses and swansonia. The bridegroom had as his best man Charles Loper of Wilmington. Mrs. Chappell is the daughter of William F. Smith of Newburgh, N. Y., and the late Viola Price Smith of Wilmington. She attend ed the local parochial school and Sacred Heart Academy. Belmont. Lieut. Chappell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Chappelll of Joliet, 111., and attended Joliet High school and Joliet junior col lege. He is a recent graduate of the Officers’ Candidate School, Camp Davis. Immediately after the ceremony, Lieut, and Mrs. Chappell left for a wedding trip through the northwestern states. 4 Miss Helen Hardison, Andrew M. Baars Marry NEW BERN, May 16.—Miss Hel en Mae Hardison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Hardison, of near New Bern, and Andrew Milton Baars of Bowden, were married April 20 at Conway, S. C. The bride wore a suit of aqua wool, with beige accessories. Mrs. Baars is a graduate of James Walker Memorial hospital school at Wilmington, and has been a member of the nursing staff there since last September. Mr. Baars is the son of Mrs. Dan iel Baars and the late Mr. Baars of Bowden. He is an alumnus of Rutherfordton college. At present he is-connected with the Grannis Higgins and Thompson construc tion company at Blackstone. Va. The couple will .reside at Ken bridge, Va. 2 Mary B. Sell, Lieut. Hill Of Raleigh, Formerly Of City Mrs. Joseph A. Hill of Raleigh, formerly of Wilmington, announces the engagement and approaching marriage of her daughter, Edith Mae, of Wilmington, to Thomas B. White, son of Mr. and Mrs D. T. White of Wilmington The wedding has been planned for June and will take place in the Trinity Methodist chcurch here. Miss Hill is employed by the per sonnel department of the U. 3. Army Engineers in Wilmington and was formerly employed by the department of revenue in Raleign. Mrs. W. B. Campbell and Mrs. A. McR. Crouch were hostesses at one of the loveliest parties of the season Thursday afternoon for the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lions’ club, at the home of Mrs. Campbell, 1718 Chestnut street. Guests were received by Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Crouch at 4:39 o'clock. The entire lower floor of the home was decorated with a profusion of spring flowers. The dining room table was cen tered with pretty centerpiece of spring flowers, flanked with long white tapers in silver holders. Miss Mary Ruth Hunt, presided at the punch bowl, and Mrs. R. C. Platt graciously assisted in the dining room. The spacious porch was ar ranged with card tables for the guests. During the afternoon, the annual election of officers took place, and the following officers were named: President, Mrs. W. Ronald Lane; vice-president, Mrs. James R.
