HOLMES FOR House Of Representatives From New Hanover County IIARITIME DAY’ PLANS ADVANCED Schell And Clark Scheduled To Speak On Programs Here Friday Night Plans for the celebration of Na tional “Maritime Day” in Wil mington, to be held at the Coun try club Friday night at 7 o’clock, has been completed by the com mittee of arrangements for the Propeller club, it was announced Saturday by H. E. Boyd, acting secretary. The principal speaker for the evening will be S. D. Schell, exe cutive director of the U. S. Mari time Commission. The celebration will begin with a dinner given by the Propeller Club, Port of Wilmington, with Cy rus D. Hogue acting as toastmas ter. At the meeting of the arrange ments committee, held last week, it was announced that the North Carolina Shipbuilding company would launch the S. S. William Moultrie during the day in honor of national “Maritime Day.” Rep resentative J. Bayard Clark will speak at the launching ceremon es. The arrangements commitete is composed of H. E. Boyd, chair man, J. T. Hiers, V. E. Drew, S. P. Ware, Pete Cantwell. M. C. Vendig, W. S. MacMahon. W. E. Lewis, George Stearns, T. D. Love and E. C. Snead. The celebration of National “Maritime Day” is in honor of the maiden voyage of the steam ship Savannah, which made the first successful trans-oceanic voy age under steam propulsion, leav ing Savannah, Ga., on May 22, 1819. A proclamation issued Dy presi dent Roosevelt follows: “Whereas on May 22. 1819, the steamship the Savannah sailed from avannah, Georgia, on the first successful trans-oceanic voy age under steam propulsion.' thus making a material contribution to the advancement of ocean trans portation; and “Whereas the Congress by joint resolution approved May 20, 1933. designated May 22 of each year as National Maritime Day and re quested the President to issue an nually a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such National Maritime Day: and “Whereas we of the United Na tions are engaged in a war for the preservation of our libeities npninst the powers of aggression; and ■'Whereas it is fitting that pub lic recognition be given to the pa triotism and courage of the offi cers and men of the cargo ships in the Victory Fleet, and to the men in the shipyards and factories whose labor and genius go into their construction: “Now, therefore, I, Franklin D. Robinson, former Wrights ville Reach resident and now direc tor of physical training at Hunter field, Savannah, Ga., lias been pro moted from first lieutenant to cap tain, according to an annoui/emenb Saturday from the public relations office at the field. A graduate of New Hanover High school and of Clemson college, Capt. Robinson has the supervision and coordination of physical training for all the person nel at the field. This exhibit gives a fairly com prehensive view of the achieve ments of the Federal Art Proj ects in the last six years. Every one who has a hobby and is inter ested in crafts should find some thing to. interest and inspire him in this show. The large tapestry of “The Sur render of Cornwallis” is beautiful in design, color and execution. Paul Friz zelle, of Snow Hill, yesterday com plimented District Solicitor David Sinclair for his efficiency in hand ling the court. “Solicitor Sinclair is probably the fastest I have worked with through out the state,” the judge stated from the bench. During the last term of court here, Sinclair established a state record by clearing a total of 116 cases in a one-week term. Hamil ton, of Morehead City, who presided over the one-week special criminal term of New Hanover superior court which was completed here today, this morning took occasion in court to praise highly the efficiency, skill, ability and integrity of purpose of David Sin clair, newly elected district solicitor who this w-eek prosecuted his first docket. During a lull in court routine today the jurist spoke from the bench, say ing "I have been favorably impressed with the skill and ability with which Soli citor Sinclair dispatched the business of his office. “During this, the first week of his official duties, he has conducted and prose cuted the criminal docket in such a highly satisfac tory manner as to persuade me that already he easily has justified the confidence reposed in him. “I bespeak tor him a very useful and commendable career. The district Will be justly proud of his future record. It has been a pleasure for me to serve with him. “I want the people of New Hanover county in particular,” he added, ‘ and the people of the district in general to know that 1 have confidence in not only the ability and efficiency of your pre sent ^icitor but also in his fairness and integrity of purpose to protect the public interest and at the same time to work no hard ship on any prisoner at the bar."
