POPE—Whose marriage took place in Wilmington in a private ceremony Wednesday evening, May 13. Lieut. Pope is stationed at the Wilmington Air Base and is formerly of Montgomery, Ala. Baccalaureate Service Slated This Afternoon High School Seniors To Hear Annual Sermon At First Baptist Church The annual baccalaureate* ves per service for the graduates of the New Hanover High school will be given at the First Baptist church this afternoon beginning at 5 o’clock. The Rev. Sankey Lee Blanton, pastor of First Baptist, will offer the sermon and be in charge of the service. Carpenter Wed In Columbia Bride Is Daughter Of Dr. And Mrs. Wilburn Wall, To Live In Columbia NEW BERN, May 23.—Miis Ernestine Wall, of Columbia, S. C., and Lieut. Howard Primrose Car penter, of New Bern and Fort Jackson, S. C., were married Sat urday afternoon, May 16, in the! Park Street Baptist church at Co lumbia. The pastor, Dr. B. B. Jem igan, officiated. The chancel was decorated with evergreens, white flowers and can dles. The bride wore a street-length dress of white organdy. Her hat and accessories were white, and at her shoulder was a corsage of white roses and valley lilies. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Wilbur H. Wall of Columbia, the bride attended Columbia High school and college. Lieut. Carpen ter is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard J. Carpenter of New Bern. He received a degree of Bachelor of Science from East Carolina Teachers college, Green ville. He taught and coached ath letics at Burgaw High school for two years before going with Bat tery D, 113th Field Artillery, to Fort Jackson for military service. The couple will reside in Colum bia. 2 Numerous Social Events Arranged For Woman’s College Anniversary Alumnae of Woman’s college, University of North Carolina, are looking forward with great antici pation to the celebration of the 50th birthday anniversary of the college. The celebration commit tes have labored untiringly in their attempt to make the festival interesting and instructive and the program certifies that they have been successful in their efforts. The anniversary celebration be gins with the commencement pro gram, June 4-8, 1942 and ends with the Founder’s Day program, Oc tober 4-5. On both occasions alum nae house will be open to all alum nae and honor guests for an in formal tea. Friday evening, June 5, a large anniversary dinner par ty will be held at the college. Hon or guests will be students of the first year, graduates of the first four classes, and members of the faculty of the early years. Of these first-year students 161 are still liv ing, among them the first “girl” who registered that first historical morning in the fall of 1892. This first girl promises to be there.' Honor guest from New Hanover county is Mrs. Guy Cardwbll of Wilmington. Saturday, June 6, there will be various general and departmental luncheons for alumnae. Alumnae are requested to make reserva tions for the luncheon in which department the participant be longs. y Several books relating to the his tory of Women’s college, topical essays written by alumnae, Alum nae miscellany, and an apprecia tion of the life of Charles Duncan Mclver founder of the college, have been written. Hardwick Receives Commission As Ensign In U.S.N.R, Robert F. Hardwick, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Hardwick of Brook wood, received his wings from the Naval Air base at Pensacola, Fla., Friday, May 15, it was learned here this week, and is now an en sign with the United States Naval Reserve. Ensign Hardwick received his basic training at the Air Base in Atlanta, Ga., and attended Wake Forest college for three years be fore entering the service. MRS. DAVID SCOTT NEILSON—The former Miss Elizabeth (Betty) Council Lytton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rome Gaffney Lytton, whose wedding took place May 11, at Conway, S. C. Mr. Neilson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Scott Neilson of Savan nah, Georgia. MRS. EDWARD PATRICK CUNNINGHAM, JR— Who prior to her marriage was Miss Louise McGowan of Wilmington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. McGowan of Warsaw. Mr. Cunningham is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Cunningham of Wilmington. The wedding was solemnized Saturday, May 23, in Wilmington. (Photograph by Adams Studio). Federated Women’s Clubs To Compete For Prizes In Pledge - Signing Drive By MRS. CHARLES G. DOAK. Following active participation m the recent successful stamps and bonds pledge-signing campaign, the North Carolina Federation of Women’s clubs started a campaign of its own. It entered the contest to win one of the three prizes of fered by the General Federation to the State Federation reporting the highest percentage of pledge sign ers among club members or their husbands. Mrs. Karl Bishopric of Spray, chairman of the North Carolina Federation’s stamps and bonds committee, says that several cIuds completed their survey and report ed to her immediately following the pledge signing campaign. Each club is to send Mrs. Bishop ric three items of information. Tht name and address of each membei of the club who signed a pledge, or whose husband signed, and the serial number of the pledge. The list must be mailed by June 13. Mrs. Bishopric has sent to the president of every senior and jun ior club detailed instructions about the contest, together with material on stamps and bonds supplied by the Treasury department. Mrs. John D. Robinson, chairman of the Federation’s War Service committee — formerly called Na tional Defense committee—visited headquarters in Raleigh Friday night. She stated that Mrs. John L. Whitehurst, president of the Gen eral federation, is emphasizing two phases of work for cltfbwomen and urging that they concentrate upon these during the coming months, namely, what they may do to keep the production lines moving, and what they may do to promote West ern Hemisphere solidarity. Mrs Robinson points out that many North Carolina clubwomen learned something of industrial conditions in the state during the study made in 1941. Buses will leave the hut promptly at 7 o’clock for the base * * * Nutrition Classes View Sound Movies, Class Slated Monday At the last meeting of the eve ning nutrition class in the Tide Water home service kitchen three sound movies in technicolor on health and nutrition were shown. A large group of home-makers and business women viewed these films. The county public health of fice sponsored the showing of the films. Another class will be held Mon day evening in the Tide Water service kitchen at 7:30 o’clock with Mrs. Cordelia B. Foster as instruc tor. MRS. The marriage of Miss Anna Ger trude Feenstra and James Craw ford Pennington was solemnized Tuesday, May 19, at Conway, S. C., at the Conway Methodist church with the Rev. F. E. Dibble officiat ing. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. S. Feenstra of Wilming ton. She wore for her wedding a suit of light blue with brown and white accessories and a corsage of orchids. Only a few intimate friends of the couple were present. Immediately following the cere mony the couple left for Long Is land, Calif., where they will make their home. ---V-.
