jVevv Uniforms For Armv Nurses J ATLANTA. Ga., May 28 — With Mi-lady getting into her latest "creations of light, summery dress e5 the Army nurse has not been forgotten and you’ll miss a real •reat if >'ou don’t see the attract •vejy styled new summer uniforms ‘vorn by her this year. According to the Fourth Corps ,jea Quartermaster's office, the mifonn. in two-tone blue, offers trjm. military appearance. It consists of a jacket, skirt and cap I Lj’is similar to the regulation “jform. The jacket, in dark blue j; trimmed with gold-colored but ions, with maroon braid on the ‘]efves and maroon piped shoulder loops. And, though it’s form fit ting, it doesn’t have the usual belt. The cloth is mohair cotton, and while it's light in weight, it holds a neat pi«=. The re-designed skirt m medium blue now has six panels creased on seams, making a smart ap pearance. Part of the new uniform is a new basque style cap with a three quarter visor, trimmed with a bow in the front, set in the center of a band one inch wide.' Ever on the alert for improve ment, the Quartermaster Corps stylists adopted the same style and fabric for the nurses’ summer dress uniforms, which come in an off-white shade, instead of blue. Interesting to note will be the possible effect these new uniforms for Army nurses will have on clothing styles for American wom en at home. 5 -V Learn-To-Swim Week Opens Here Monday Monday afternoon at 6:00 o’clock will mark the beginning of a “Learn-to-Swim” class for adult members of the Y. How To Make A Suit And Slacks For The Small Amount Of 50 Cents BY DOROTHY ROE WMe World Fashion Editor THIS is the year when patches are smarter than sequins, and a mptr‘h°aVnr SUlt isa badge of honor Perhaps your husband or broth er aiready has changed his civvies or a uniform and marched off to tne wars, leaving a closet full of handsome tweeds and flannels. We dont want to start a mass massacre of men’s wardrobes but ^th1n<rSUggeSt.that amonS ^se clothing souvenirs there may be a s -aKy r s *»»» ln the lavish way of men, that can be transformed into a brand new modish outfit for your Enterprising British women have been whacking up their hus band s suits since the war began and turning out creditable tail leurs for themselves, to ease the pinch of rationing. They have found—and so can you—that the worn places of a man’s suit can be neatly eliminated in the make over process, and that the finished product can turn out to be a thing of beauty. I know, I know—tailoring a suit is no job for a novice. If you are uncertain of your skill, there’s a sewing center in practically every community in America, with skilled dressmakers who are pant ing with eagerness to show you how, free-for-nothing. They’ll tip you off on the best methods of re cutting Friend Husband’s old suit, and show you the latest marvels of sewing machine short-cuts to boot. Select a suit with two pairs of pants, if possible. The extra pair you can make a pair of slacks. Be fore you start, be sure the fabric is clean. You can start your remodeling job by trying on the jacket first to see if any part or parts can be used the way it stands. If it is too many sizes too big, your best bet is to rip all seams. After you have done this, take a look at the wrong side of the fabric. Worsteds and good tweeds can usually be used again on the wrong side, and the finished look will be one of complete newness. Then, fortify yourself with a good classic suit pattern that bears close resem blance to the original jacket. The sleeves must be recut, reset into a pared-down shoulder line, and the sides taken in and shaped. The front and back of the jacket will have to be cut and shaped into narrower proportions, and most likely, lifted as well, to bring it to proper torso length. The front and back are then darted at the waist, If the notched collar is the shallow, narrow type, you may be able to use it as it is, other wise it may need to be raised and tapered. The next thing to consider is the jacket closing. If it has a double breasted closing, the procedure is simple. Simply reverse the closing from left over right, to right over left. You may find that additional buttonholes at the top are neces sary to give you a nipped-in look. Mark off the places for the new buttonholes, then use the button holer attachment to do a jig-time job of buttonhole - making for Help Kidneys If you suffer from Backache, Getting Bp Nights, Nervousness, Leg Pains, Swollen Ankles and feel worn out, due to non-organic and non-systemlc Kidney and Bladder trou bles, you should try Cystex which is giving joyous help to thousands. S. Army came from Milwaukee, Sunday for a short visit with his parents here. Gordon recently has had a month’s training at the motorcycle school in Milwaukee and is now returning to Fort Bragg.— James Booth, pharmacist’s mate in the U. S. Navy, has been sent from San Diego, Calif., to Dallas, Tex as. W. Register and Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Register.— Mr. and Mrs. Harry Turner, who have been residing in New York city, recently have moved to their new home near Rosehill.— Master Ben Murray is patch pockets, cut them out of the unused trouser pieces and stitch them over the slot pockets, using the edge- -stitcher attach ment for precise, reinforced stitch-1 ing around the pocket edges. By leaving the inside slot pockets in tact, you have created a double pocket arrangement, inside and out, and at the same time, you’ve enhanced the appearance of the jacket itself. A simple four-gored skirt pat tern is the best choice to guide you in making over the ripped trousers. Turn them upside down, using the narrow or bottom part of the leg for the waistline. The trouser width will determine whether you can make a four gore skirt with a center pleat or one with no pleat at all. However, if you prefer a skirt with a pleat and you find that the trousers are not wide enough, use a separate piece, perhaps a strip that’s been cut out of the unused top of the trousers’ and make an insertion pleat. If you can get hold of an extra pair of matching or contrasting trousers, convert them into slacks to wear with the suit jacket all through the summer and on into fall. There’s no need to destroy the essential lines of the original trousers. Rip all the seams, and with a slacks pattern, you’ll find that you can taper them down quickly. And there you are, with a new suit and slacks to match at a total cost of 50 cents for buttons and binding.
