CHIEF OF GESTAPO TO PURGE CZECHS People Expect The Worst In Retaliation For Shoot ing Of Heydrich 1 —— / LONDON, May 28.—(B—Heinrich Himmler, chief of the Nazi Gesta po and perhaps the most feared man in Europe, was reported to day to have flown to Prague to take personal charge of the in quiry and retaliation arising out of the attempted assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, his chief aide. From this report Czechs here ex pected the worst. One government spokesman estimated that the Ger. mans had 15,000 Czechs in concen tration camps in the protectorate of Moravia and Bohemia, and ex pressed fears they would be used as hostages as the Nazis have been doing in France. Because of Heydnch’s position in the Gestapo the most severe reprisals were expected. All Bohemia and, Moravia were being searched for those respon- , sible for the attack and every male , over 15 was ordered to register with the police by midnight tomor- ' row. ' The decree, broadcast by the . Prague radio, said German sol- j diers would shoot on the spot any c man without a registration card ; after the deadline. Czechs sources here expressed the belief that hun dreds already have been arrested. ' The man who bore the title of ' Reich’s protector of Bohemia and 1 Moravia was said to be in a serious 1 condition. The Prague radio asserted that j two men waited for hours to kill him as he rode through a Prague suburb. According to the radio, one ] threw a bomb and the other start- ' ed shooting with an automatic : rifle. One fled on foot, the other on 1 a bicycle. 1 The radio said a brief case bear- J ing the label of the White Swan, ‘ a small Prague hotel, had been • found wTth another “object” when I the men fled. 3 I -V- 1 Charlotte Salvation Army Officers Plan Visit Here Sunday Adjutant and Mrs. Frank Logino, of the Charlotte headquarters of the Salvation Army will conduct services at the Salvation Army cit adel on South Front street at 11 o’clock ^Sunday morning. WPB WuTSet~Aside Fine Cotton Yarn For Army And Navy WASHINGTON, May 28.— UFI — The War Production Board today ordered a major portion of the nation’s fine cotton yarn produc tion set aside for the Army and Navy, forcing a sharp curtailment in the manufacture of more expen sive men’s shirts and underwear and women’s dresses. Under terms of the order, como. ed yarn mills must earmark at least 40 per cent of their output of medium combed yarn and not less than 65 per cent of their coarse combed yarn for the armed serv ices, and operate at “maximum practicable capacity.” Officials predicted the action would make from 200,000,000 to 250.000. 000 yards of cloth avail able for current military require ments with!*; 60 days and mean an annual supply for the military ranging between 600,000,000 a nd 700.000. 000 yards. 3 BLAKELY IS AGAIN ATTACKED BY SUB Crippled Destroyer Makes Port At St. Lucia, Brit ish West Indies ST. LUCIA, British West Indies, May 27 —(Delayed)—Iff)— Surviv ing a second undersea attack with, in three days, the crippled United States destroyer Blakeley reached port here tonight after a sea and air battle with ■ a pack of Axis submarines lurking off Martinique. Sinking of one or more of the submarines by United S t a t es planes was indicated, but whether in this later clash or the earlier one was not disclosed. (Reuters, British news agency, said in London that a submarine which attacked the Blakeley had been sunk and that it was the second destroyed in that area with in a week.) The Blakeley was damaged by a submarine torpedo on Monday in territorial waters of Martinique Vichy-French island only 20 miles from here. Six of her crew were killed and 12 injured. She reached Fort De France Martinique, under her own power, however, and today put out for Port Castries, St. Lucia. Crippled, she could make only ten knots. The attacks by the pack of sub marines followed. Naval authori ties, already aware of the sub marines’ presence in this area, were not surprised. (This dispatch did not disclose whether the destroyer was hit again. Previous accounts of the first attack had listed the Blake ley’s casualties as 10 missing and six wounded, but whether the new casualty figures referred to the first or second attack was not clear.) On regular patrol off Martinique when first attacked, the Blakeley limped into Fort De France and tied up alongside the French air TO THE VOTERS OF NEW HANOVER COUNTY The office of the Clerk of the Superior Court is one of the most important within the gift of the people. The office carries so many important duties that it is difficult to single out any par ticular one as an example.
