(R) L.S.N.R. “AVENGE PEARL HARBOR” Six months ago yesterday, the morning sun rose with its usual threat to the battered thermome ters at Pearl Harbor, and the hun dreds of American sailors, station ed aboard the several ships in (he harbors sauntered forth in their spotless white uniforms. It wa s Sunday, the one day in the week when worship is placed before things military in the Navy. Many of the boys were going ashore to church; some had planned to take advantage of their “liberty”—if it happened to be theirs for the day—by visiting friends on shore. The Navy still was unmolested, and human de cency still reigned in that section of the world. But, out of the skies came a swarm of planes—apparently from nowhere in particular, and every where in general. From a distance, the planes were mistaken by the Americans as their own patrol planes, but a few seconds later— at 6:25 a.m —the first bomb from the Japanese invaders crashed out the terrible message from the Land of the' Rising Sun. Japanese Had Jump The sailors and the soldiers sprang to their posts, but it al most was too late. The Nipponese, well up on their treacherous tac tics, were there, and had tne jump. The United States lost heavily that day—both in men and proper ty. But the Japanese also suffered at the hands of the blazing anti aircraft guns, wh'ch brought down plane after plane. One of the youthful sailors told a colorful story about what he saw that day. “You should have been there, Pal,” he said, with his starry eyes almost telling the story for him. “They caught us naDping. I reck on. but they paid for it. I saw Diane after plane fall, and burn One of the planes fell in the water about 500 feet from my ship, and just before the olane hit. the pilot jumped out. He landed on hi s stomach, and he was almost bent in two pieces. I’ll bet it broke his back in a hundred places. “Those pilots were mighty sorry ones. They should have done a lot more damage than they did. Not Forgotten But the tragic story of Pearl Harbor has not been forgotten, and it never will be. All over the nation yesterday, Naval Recruit ing Stations commemorated the six-month anniversary of P e arl Harbor—and at 2:25 p.m., which is the corresponding minute and hour to the time when the first bomb fell on Pearl Harbor, over 20.000 American men and boys held ud their hand in a solemn oath of enlistment into the United States Navy—the greatest fleet in th«> world. These men are doing more than just “joining the Navy.” They are throwing a threat directly into the face of the treacherous Nipponese, who know no ethics of decency. That threat will be carried out by the United States Navy, the Army, the Marnes. and the Coast Guard —plus all the folks back home who “back the fighting men.” NEGROES AS SEAMEN The Wilmington Recruiting of fice—and the 400 other similar sta tions over the nation—have exper ienced a general interest in the 180Legal Carolina, for violation of the Internal Revenue Laws, to-wit: Section 3321, I R. Any person claiming an inter est in said property must appear at the office of Investigator in Charge, Alcohol Tax Unit, Charlotte, North Carolina, and file claim and cost bond as provided by Section 3724. I. R. C.. on or before June 24, 1942. otherwise ^ie property will be disposed of according to law. R. E. Tuttle, District Supervisor announcemeru by the Navy depart, menl that negroes now are eligible for enlistment as apprentice sea men in the Naval Reserve. Not only because this is th e first time in the history of the Navy that the colored man has been eligible for such enlistment, but because it is a step the Navy has been considering for ma n y years. Many Wilmington Negroes have asked for information, a nd three were sent to Raleigh tn i s week from Wilmington—as the first Negro seamen enlisted in North Carolina. Formerly. Negroes were enlisted as mess attendants, a post which requires very little actual combat duty. AVIATION CADETS Boys who are graduates of High school, and who are physically and mentally fit, now are being accepted for training as Naval aviators, in the Navy’s V-5 pro gram. Until recently, to be eligible for Naval aviation, the applicant must have had at least two years col lege—and pass a mental examina tion. Men who are from 18 to 27 and have the above qualifications'are eligible for immediate enlistment into V-5. Full details may be ob tained at the local recruiting sta tion in the post office. Prevatte, WPA Exec utive, Discusses Plans With Officials WHITEVILLE, June 7.—The pos sibility of securing a municipal airport for Whiteville was the topic of a lengthy discussion at a meeting of the city council here last night, when W. Joe Prevatte, district WPA engineer, outlined the steps to be taken. A committee was appointed by the council to locate three or four possible sites in the vicinity of Whiteville. These sites must be first approved by the Civil Aero nautics Authority before they can be given consideration as possible locations for airports. As soon as the- sites are located, the CAA will either approve or reject them, according to t h a 4* merits. Prevatte outlines the plan of pro cedure as follows: 1. The projec. must have a spon sor, which in this instance might either be Columbus county or the town of Whiteville, or both. 2. A suitable site, approved by the CAA must be secured by me sponsor. Before worK is started by the WPA, a fee simple title to this site must be owned by the sponsor. 3. The sponsor must secure the services of a competent airport engineer who will prepare the nec essary plans, in accordance with the WPA requirements. -V Cutting Scrape Ends With Arrest Of Negro James McKoy was arrested on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon resulting in injuries, about 1:45 Sunday afternoon, at 810 Wright street, police records re veal. Police said McKoy was charged with cutting Fletcher Lewis on the head and back with a knife or some other sharp instrument. Lewis was treated at James Walker Memorial hospital and re leased. 155 Seeds-Plants-Bulbs PROTECT YOUR GARDEN from insect; by spraying or dust ing regularly.
