TROOPSURGED TO BUY BONDS General Smith Asks Camp Davis Men To Lead In This Campaign Maj. Gen. Frederick H. Smith yesterday urged personnel of Camp Davis to purchase war bonds that “we can acquire an earlier and more glorious victory.” He asked that “everybody from bottom to top” cooperate in the war bond drive. General Smith said “Let me urge upon you two things: first that you are with the colors and pre pared to give all for your country, can set the pace for others in the purchase of bonds; second, that war savings bonds are an excel lent investment. “When you are back home after the war, these savings bonds will mean ready cash when you need it.” In stressing the need for whole hearted cooperation in the bond campaign, the commanding general said the advantages of bond pur chases should be explained by re gimental commanders, battalion commanders, battery officers and first sergeants. Sale of war bonds at Camp Davis through pay reservations is expect ed to increase following anticipa ted passage of the army pay bill now before congress. Already, hun dreds of men have signed up to purchase bonds through monthly pay deductions. -V GET RICH IN ARMY NOW At Mather Field, Calif., Pvt. Charles ' Inga admits the army serves good chow—he found a large pearl in an oyster served him. 4 “Here,” the wholesaler said en thusiastically to the department stores buyer, “is a close-out number that you can make a heavy profit on. The wholesalp price is so low that you could easily get a hundred percent markup and still be below the price ceiling.” The buyer shook his head. “Our store doesn’t operate on the basis of getting the ceiling price.” he said. "Our instructions are that we must never work on the theory of getting a maximum profit. When we buy merchandise, the question wp must ask is, ‘How low a price can we charge for this and still make a fair profit?' ‘‘Actually, we make more money that way. Goods with a high mark up don’t move fast. Even if the item is a fair value, soriffe other merchant will bp smart enough to feature it at a lower price. "Goods being offered at the lowest possible price move fast. People ap preciate values, and all we have to do is advertise them. We let every family in the community know that we have a special value, and the sales are terrific. “We know that nobody will take the business away from us by un der-selling. We make a fair profit on each item — and our volume of sales is such that we make far more money than we could hcrpp to make by going after all the profit per-sale we could squeeze out. “If any merchant will sell goods at the lowest price compatible with present operating costs, and will let people know about it through ad vertising. he'll end up ‘way ahead of the fellow who tries to make a killing with a few customers.” T
