A request for volunteers was sent last week to the various civic clubs and organizations by the committee composed by Mr. Solo mon, Mrs. W. G. Whitehead and John A. Sheehan. “Recognizing that an extensive and well-rounded program re quires the support of volunteers, both as leaders ■ and as partici pants, we are asking citizens here to help us to carry on the activi ties of the USO,’' Mr. Solomon said. Volunteers should contact any member of the committee. Officers Are Invited To Attend Gathering Here Southeastern North Carolina law enforcement officers have been in vited to attend a one-day national defense school at the USO club at Second and Orange streets here on June 25, Edward Scheidt, agent in charge of the Charlotte office of the Federal Bureau of Investiga tion, announced Saturday. Sponsored by the FBI, the meet ing here will include discussions of problems relating to espionage and sabotage; training of police and police auxiliaries for duties under air raid conditions, and ways in which law enforcement officers can cooperate with local civilian protection organizations. The meeting here, one of six over the state, will convene at 10:30 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. Speakers on the program will in clude Agent Scheidt, Chief of Po lice Walter Anderson of Winson Salem, and Director Albert Coates of the Institute of Government at Chapel Hill. -V Torch Singer Charges Musician With Assault NEW YORK, June 13—UP—Miss Sybil Ross, 25, a torch singer to day had Dan Albert, 29, a trum pet player, placed under $2,000 bail on a charge of felonious as sault. Miss Ross told Magistrate Har ry G. Andrews that she had been working with Albert for three weeks at Broadway’s “Music Bar,” a night spot. Last night, she continued, Al bert tossed a lighted cigarette down the front of her evening gown while she was singing and she suffered burns. ‘!I don’t know why I did it,” Albert told the court.
