June 14.— Iff) — Senator Mead (D - N. y.) today proposed that a "modern home de fense army’’ be setup immediately to guard against possible attacks by enemy parachute troops or Commando raiders. Mead said he was preparing a letter to Congressional leaders and state governors outlining his plan which, he declared, "would not necessarily interfere with the man power requirements of our armed forces or those of our defense in dustries.’’ He suggested that members of the home units could be recriyted from the ranks of First World War veterans, men reiected from armed service because of some slight physical defect, and from sportsmen’s clubs. The New Yorker expressed be lief the United Nations would win the war in 1943 and that it was unlikely this country would be in vaded, but explained that he felt home defense units were necessary because “almost witnout exception our military and naval authorities tell us to prepare for retaliatory attacks from the air.” 3 -V Pastor Tells Church To Keep Faith In U. S. PHILADELPHIA, June 14—UP— Members of Old Zion Lutheran church who refused to believe their pastor is a Nazi spy broke into tears today when a visiting clergy man besought them to keep their faith in America. The pastor is the Rev. Kurt Emil Bruno Molzahn, who was jailed last Wednesday on charges of per mitting use of his parsonage as a “postoffice” for a Nazi - Japanese spy ring. The Rev. Fritz O. Evers, of Zion Lutheran church, Baltimore, Md., filled pastor Molzahn’s pulpit to day and the congregation appear ed tense and worried when he an nounced, in German, his t e x t: “Cast Not Away Your Confidence.” There were audible sobs when he said: “We have a basis for the con fidence and trust which God gave us in our life, our family, our friends and in our faith in our land, America, and in America’s destiny.” He spoke of “America, our land” as one of the congregation’s “God given blessings.” He offered no special prayer for Pastor Molzahn, who was indicted by a Federal grand jury at Hart ford, Conn., with Gerhardt Wil helm Kunze, American-born leader of t h e German - American Bund, and three others. -V Anti-Communist Court In France Hard On Boy VICHY, Unoccupied France. June 14.— OP) —Anti-Communist courts in the occupied zone, whose verdicts are without appeal, have handed out stiff sentences to per sons convicted of spreading party propaganda. A 17-year-old youth at Rennes was given life at hard labor, in Absentia, while three others re ceived jail terms of up to five years. At Douai, a 60-year-old woman was sentenced to a year in jai' and fined 12,000 francs (roughly $240). 180 Legal DeSoto Sedan, motor No. S7-30227, with accessories, was seized in New Hanover County, North Carolina, for violation of the Internal Revenue Laws, to-wit: Sec tion 3321, I. Any settlement necessarily would involve the disposition of Italian demands for such bits as Nice, Corsica and Tunisia, and questions concerning the administration of some of France’s African colonial possessions. Spain, too, is greatly interested, especially in a more even split of Morocco, and this is one of the things, it is reported which prompt ed the visit to Paris of Ramon Serrano Suner, Spain’s foreign minister. He departed for Rome today after several days in France. (A Berlin broadcast of a Madrid dispatch said he would sign an eco nomic agreement with Italy.) Germany would like a perman ent settlement by June 25, the an. niversary of the armistice, so she could trumpet progress in creation of the Hitler “new order,” accord ing to information from Vichy. 3 -V State Supreme Court Hands Down Rulings RALEIGH, N. C„ June 14.—W— In a series of rulings released to day, Attorney General Harry Mc Mullan held that there is no state law which prohibits participation in politics and elections by school teachers and other state employes paid from state funds. Other rulings heard: Boards of county commissioners are not authorized to enact block out ordinances. The board of aldermen of a mu nicipality may not call an election to forbid the sale of wine and beer within the city without special leg islative authority. A city may not adopt the city manager plan of government with out holding a special election on the subject. When a building in a municipal ity has been condemned and a per mit cannot be issued for its repair because of the nature of the build ing, the owner may be prosecuted criminally if he refuses to tear it down. Under laws prohibiting a com missioner of a public trust to con tract for his own benefit, it is not proper for the mayor of board of aldermen of a town to sell property to the town or for a member of a airport authority bonds when they are sold by the local government commission. There would be no ob jection to the purchase of the bonds after the local government com mission has sold them.
