Klutz, Salisbury attorney and Republican senatorial candi date in the recent primary, a 30 day suspended sentence when Klutz was arraigned before him in Superior Court this afternoon under a contempt proceeding. The 30-day sentence, in Cabarrus county jail, was suspended and Klutz was paroled in the custody of his brother, Dr. A. F. Klutz, of Maiden, after the Salisbury man, had, through counsel, offered an apology to the court. Judge Nettles in passing sen tence commented that he realized that Klutz’s action resulted be cause of his "mental and physical condition” and that he had no per sonal feelings in the matter. The Salisbury attorney was ar rested at his home last week on a capias issued on order of Judge Nettles at Concord when the law yer failed to appear in court on the jurist’s order. Before J u d ge Nettles acted then he overruled a motion by Klutz”s counsel seeking to disqualify him as pr e s i ding judge. Klutz had claimed that he and a defendant for whom he was bondsman had been unfairly treat ed because he was a Republican and opposing counsel was a Dem ocrat. -V JAVA BUDDHIST TEMPLE LARGEST The largest Buddhist temple in the world is in Java, the Boro Buddttr. _3 180Legal intersection of unnumbered hign way leading around east side White Lake; thence over unnumbered highway to U. Mo., June 21—(Wide World) — From basement workshops of part- time inventors and from industrial lab oratories have come new and fancier ways to fight incendiary bombs—but the men who ought to know are sticking to sand and water spray. Since last summer, chemical warfare school officers have been getting and testing incendiary bomb-fighting ideas from the kitchen laboratories. Some sugges tion came in letters and telegrams Other inventors, lugging precious samples with them, came here to watch their theories put to trial. The officers played no favorites, even if their own thoughts on the matter differed from the inven tor’s. Working under Brig. Gen. R. L. Avery, commander of the chemical warfare center, the chef ist-officers submitted samples to field and laboratory tests. A Missourian thought coal oil and sand would be just dandy for smothering a magnesium bomb. When the chemists threw the stuff on a burning bomb, the coil oil vaporized and flames shot several feet into the air. They vetoed that idea. Others suggested pitch as the perfect antidote for an incendiary Out trooped the officers to the testing grounds. They ignited a six inch bomb and let it burn 55 sec onds. When they threw the pitch on, it gave off such dense clouds of smoke that a class of men about 70 yards downwind had to move. “This cloud,” the experts report ed, “would have suffocated a per son in an attic or closed room. After the test, it took a man an Beach Cottage Owners Urged To List Rooms Owners of cottages at Wrights ville and Carolina Beaches were urged yesterday to list their vacant rooms, apartments and cottages with the Homes Registration office in the postoffice or with a realtor to provide housing facilities for the increasing number of shipyard workers here. “Indications are that there are a small number of vacant rooms homes and apartments at the two beach resorts.” Henry R. Emory, chairman of the defense housing committee of the New Hanover de fense council, said. “It would be a partial solution to the war housing problem her" if those vacant dwelling places were made available to shipyard workers. ” At the same time, he urged ship yard workers seeking shelter to try the beaches for homes instead of waiting for the beach landlords to list them. “The landlords are usually will ing to lease property on a yearly basis much lower than the rates usually charged vacationers,’ he said. J The defense housing committee, however, is going to continue its efforts to find homes for woikers, many of whom have quit their jobs here to seek work elsewhere be cause of the shortage of shelter, here in Wilmington. “Every time a worker at the shipyard leaves or every time one refuses employment because of lack of shelter, it means that a Liberty freighter is going to be de layed in delivery for service in carrying supplies of wai to Amer ica’s many war fronts,” Mr. Emory declared. “We urge every home owner to list any vacant space, either in town, on the beaches or in the county, with the Homes Registra tion office or with a real estate I agent at once.” hour to clean a shovel used in the experiment. One mixture of pitch and borax merely helped the magnesium burn. From Massachusetts came an inventor with a viscous water glass solution. Though two men tried to jet the thick fluid onto the bomb, the application didn’t stop the lire, and the bomb burned right through the pine stage on which the test was conducted. Powdered glass, on the ot h e r hand, worked well. The glass melt ed into a plastic slag which the experimenters flipped over like a pancake, 18 inches in diameter and four inches thick. The core of the glass griddle cake was a white hot mass of magnesium, s t i 11 burning but out of harm’s way A naval officer suggested sugar might smother fire bombs. But the Edgewood officers found that sug ar made a bomb burn with a pretty blue flame—and did little else. Fear of reprisal fire-bombing raids on the West coast led to an urgent telegram from Los Angeles, asking if beach sand would be o.k. for use in such a raid. The inquiry was prompted by re ports that salt in the sand would give off noxious fumes if it con tacted the flaming magnesium "There seems to be absolutely no foundation” for the stories, the Edgewood officers replied. They pointed out that salt was a good magnesium extinguisher and so was sand. They found no danger of poisonous fumes from a combination of the two on a fire bomb. On the other hand, the officers sa d experiments proved carbon tetrachloride, a standard fire ex tinguisher, is a dangerous anti fire bomb weapon. “It is the worst thing to u s e on burning mag nesium,” says Lieut. Col. William E. Caldwell, chief of the school’s protective services. In the first place, he contended, it gives off noxious fumes. Sec ondly, it makes bomb burn more vigorously. Thirdly, it spat ters the molten magnesium. Out on the pleasant fields of the arsenal, the experiments showed soap had other uses than washing faces. Of all the solids tested on burning magnesium, pure soap was the best. But soap in its chemically pure forms is expensive, so the officers came right back to sand and water. If you take their advice, you’ll have a spray pump and a bucket of sand in your hallway, just in case. TT Sheriff Asks Officers To Attend Defense Course Attendance at a one-day national defense school here Thursday by southeastern North Carolina law enforcement officers was urged Tuesday by Sheriff C. David Jones. Invited to attend the school, which is sponsored by the Insti tute of Government and the FBI at Chapel Hill, are patrolmen, city police, sheriffs, deputies and mem bers of the shipyard and other war project police forces. Edward Scheidt of Charlotte FBI agent in charge, will preside. Special attention will be given to law enforcement problems during war-time emergencies. The school will open at 10:30 Thursday morning in the ■ auditori um of the USO center at Second and Orange streets here. It will adjourn at 5 o’clock Thursday aft ernoon. 2 -V NEW SECRET INK IN USE A secret ink that soaks up light in the daytime and gives if off at night was recently shown. i 157 Shoes Guaranteed Shoe Repairs LITTLE JOE SHOE REPAIR 115 So.
