The loans may be made for a term as long as seven years. “Some examples of the work that can be done with this type of loan are to add several rooms suitable for rooming or housekeeping pui poses to an existing house; re modeling an attic or a se c o nd story into an apartment; or con verting a structure which is not now a dwelling into a one or multi family home,’’ officials sad. Loans for war conversion pur poses are exempt from the Fed eral Reserve Board’s regulation on consumer credit and can be ap proved by the state FHA office in Greensboro instead of having to be submitted to Washington. Application blanks for the ne w loans can be obtained from the Greater Wilmington chamber of commerce offices on Front stret. “Here is an opportunity to en large your present home and, at the same time, be of assistance to the war effort by helping to house war workers here,” the officials of the defense housing committee de clared. “The defense housing committee urges every home owner or prop erty owner to consider this means of aiding the war effort.” 4 -V Camp Davis Volley Fire PAY INCREASE The recent pay increase for soldiers is retroative to June 1. In order that troops may get this before the end of July the Camp Davis Finance office is making a change in its routine. instead of paying all units at one fell swoop, each unit will be paid as soon after the end of June as it can fill out its pay roll. The order of payment will be first come first served. PAY DEDUCTION Because so many army men have asked for pay roll deduc tions to buy war bonds, the War Department announces that there may be as much as three month’s delay in mailing out certificates of purchase or the bonds them selves to the owners. Interest will start with the date of pur chase. MESS HALL TROUBLE A story from Hq. Btry., 1st Bn., 514th: “Our cooks have been changing so rapidly that the other day one left during the preparation of a meal. He neglected to tell the new cook coming on that he, the old cook, had salted the potatoes, so that the new cook coming on wouldn't have to salt them after the old cook had left. “Now the new cook is blaming the old cook for not telling him, the new cook, that he, the old cook, had already salted the potatoes. Aw spuds.” ADD MESS HALL Here’s a conversation reported from the same battery, which seems to have its mind on mess halls: A sergeant was giving a ton gue-lashing to the dining room orderly for doing something a corporal told him to do that he should have know'n was W'rong. “What would you do,” blazed the sergeant, “if I told you to stick your head in that pan of hot, soapy water?” “Oh well,” replied the orderly seriously, “I’d tell a table waiter to do it.” We Get You There! Veteran Of First World War Serving Again At Camp Davis A first lieutenant in Camp Davis has just been promoted to captain, but it is no ordinary promotion. The new captain held that rank in the last war. Capt. Vincent P. Rousseau, In fantry, holder of the Purple Heart and veteran of the Aisne-Marne and Oise-Aisne campaigns, ser ved as a captain through most of World war I. Called back to active service from the retired list over a year ago as first lieutenant. Captain Rousseau has at last been pro moted to his former rank. He was first commissioned by examination from civil life in June 1917 and by August of tha' year held the temporary rank of captain with the 39th Infantry of the 4th Division. That was his outfit througout his service in France. The division moved overseas in April, 1918, holding reserve posi tions until the day before the Ger man attack at Chateau-Thierry. When that attack came the Fourth had occupied a sector immedia tely adjacent to the Marne push. Capt. Rousseau went forward with his unit in the counterattack, serving for a while as acting bat talion commander. But in the Sois sons-Rheims sector, to which the American troops had carried their advance, he was severely wound ed. The action occurred at the ap proaches of the little town of Fismes. Captain Rousseau was in a group bombed by five German bombers, an incident not as fre quent then as in the present war. That bombing came close to put ting the captain permanently out of action. As a result he spent two and a half years in army hos pitals. He also received, later, the Purple Heart, oldest army decoration. Captain Rousseau was an the retired list during the years of peace because of his disability. An act of 1930 made him a cap of his rank in the last war. tain on the retired list by virtue When called into active service again in March, 1941, the former captain was only a first lieuten ant. He lacked four days of nec the higher rank. As a lieutenant essary time fcf service to get he had served at Camp Davis as provost marshal and, more re cently, assistant intelligence of ficer. His long-awaited promotion came through last week and the captain of the first World war is a captain in the second World war -V Special ‘Arrival Card’ Is Prepared By Army The War Deparment has de vised a special “arrival card” designed to give promp* informa tion to parents .relatives and friends of the safe arrival of mili tary personnel overseas. More than twenty officers, non coms and privates were recorded at the camp chaplain’s office, and unrecorded offers are still coming in. The babies, at present in a hos pital in Wilmington, are Alma Kay and Nancy Fay, twin daughters of James R. Griffin, civilian employe at the camp. He was formerly a soldier stationed here. Griffin’s family has been in the hospital for some time. The trans fusions are required to bring the infants’ strength up to a po i n t where they can safely leave the instituton. The first two soldiers to volun teer who had the right type of blood were chosen. They donated their blood Saturday afternoon. They specified that the gift be anonymous. The entire 8th Observation squadron volunteered en masse. But by the time men with th e right type of blood were found in the air vnit, the other volunteers had been accepted. 4 -V Local Museum Of Art Will Close Tuesday The Wilmington WPA Museum of Art will close its doors Tuesday. Until that time, the exhibition of paintings by Wilmington artists will be on dsplay. During the month they have been on view, a large number of visitors have looked them over, local people, service men, and travellers. Comments on the work have been most appreciative, and in some instances enthusiastic, of ficials said.
