We will be deferring students and pay ing them at the same time. You can’t tell me that there won’t be some slackers among those who will get the loans.” This argument proved effective. The loan fund was cut to $5,000,000 and loans were restricted to stu dents in the last two years of col lege. During the stormy closed - door hearing on his budget before the MERRY-GO-ROUND Senate Appropriations committee, Price Administrator Leon Hender son was bluntly told by several members that if he would dish out political jobs he could get the mon ey he wants to avert ruinous war time inflation. . . Cooperation between WPA and authorities at Camp Davis enabled over 3,000 officers and enlisted men to pursue night school courses ranging from foreign languages and higher mathematics to read ing and writing, according to the first annual report on activities of the Camp Davis WPA schools. The report was compiled by Miss Mabel L. Bacon, supervisor of the Highway Robbery Case Hearing Set For Today Agnes Jennings, charged with as sault with a deadly weapon, was allowed to withdraw her appeal and accept the sentence of Recorder's court of two months on the county farm at Tuesday’s session of the court. Hearing for Jospeh Green, charge of hit and run driving also was continued until today. Green is charged with holding up and rob bing Jessie Johnson of $5 by point ing a pistol at him on July 11. Hearing for F. M. Pugh on a chareg of hit and run driving also was continued until today. Pugh is charge with failing to stop and of fer assistance and give his name, address, operator’s license number and registration number of auto mobile he was driving which was in collision with another car driven by Edward Simpson on July 11. -V Quartermaster Officers Inspect Army Cantonment Col. B. W. Pelton and Maj. R. M. Bauknight, quartermaster officers assigned to the First Army, Gov ernor’s Island, N. Y., visited Camp Davis Tuesday to inspect quarter master organizations. After leaving Camp Davis, the officers went to Charleston, S. C. Over 3,000 Men At Camp Davis Pursue Night School Education ---- W -— WPA-sponsored courses. Approxi mately 2,020 were enrolled in Type B subjects, which included alge bra, trigonometry, Spanish, jour alism and public speaking, while the remainder of the students fol lowed the Type A program, in cluding arithmetic, English, spell ing, reading and writing. The roster of students contained the names of officers and enlisted men from lieutenant colonels to buck privates. Mathematics , courses were more popular with the enlisted men, many of whom needed tne subject to become more proficient in their anti-air craft training, while the officers had a particular liking for foreign languages. Lieut.-Col. John R. Sampey, spe cial service officer, who assisted the WPA in setting up its program at Camp Davis, pointed out Tues day that the classes have not only served to make officers and sol diers more valuable to their re spective military units, but also to develop new skills which will prove useful if and when they re turn to civilian life. | About 4b of the recent students have enrolled in the Anti-aircraft Artillery Officer Candidate school at Davis and seven have success fully taken the entrance examina tion as aviation cadets. During the year 18 teachers served as full-time paid staff members and they were assisted by 46 different volunteers. Many of the volunteers had been public school teachers as civilians. Stu dents ranged in age from 26 to 54. Most of the students were about 22 years old. There were 623 officers and en listed men attending WPA classes during the month of June, Miss Bacon reported. 2 -V WHO AM I? — Here’s Who I Am: Mrs. Edith Nourse Rogers.
