May Be Able To Destroy Japanese Air Power In China -- w_'_ MIAMI, Fla., Aug. 23— (A>> — George L. Paxton, 30-ysar-old Texan who once was outnumbered and sot down by Japanese lighters as he served with the American volunteer group in Burma, said to dal he thought the United States could wipe out Japanese air pow er in China by Maintaining a force of 100 fighters and 50 bombers there. At the same time, the Abiliene flying Tiger disagreed with those who contend the Japanese made a mistake in preading out so far in their operations. Their mistake was in stopping when they did, he said in an interview. “Don’t kid yourself—they had the power and they still have it,” he remarked. Paxton’s flight of six flying Ti gers was caught by 27 Japs Jan. 24, re related. Three of the Ameri cans were downed but all survi ved crash landings at or near their airfield. The Texan’s plane was riddled by 61 machine gun bul lets and five struck him but the wounds were slight and he re quired but a day’s hospitalization. Only one enemy plane was downed. “Usually it went the other way, but somebody has to get the hard luck sometime,” he said. Most of the AVG pilots had to perform some staff duty, and Paxton was finanec officer. He is on his way to New York to wind up the financial affairs of the group, having flown 11,000 miles in six days. Paxton was proud of the ac complishments of the Flying Ti gers. “It was a dream outfit. I'm still rubbing my eyes,” he said. “Every man worshipped Gen. Claire L.Chennault. He was a genius and in this war you have to be a genius.” Although the Chinese them selves are practicully without air support, they have “plenty on the ball” when ticomes to fighting, he declared. “They fight the Japs the way the Japs themselves fight, if you add up the score of the last five years you have the story of the Chinese fighter.” He expects the Japanese in Bur ma to move when the Monsoon seasons ends, in about a month, but thinks they will strike at China rather than India. DIPLOMATlCPOST OPENS IN MIAMI Will Meet Arriving Emis saries From Foreign Nations, Give Aid MIAMI, Fla., Aug. 23— m — Something new in international diplomacy—a combined office of the State department and the Co ordinator of Inter-American affairs —opens here tomorrow to smooth . the path of good neighbor visitors in war-busy America. Arriving diplomats, generals, ad mirals and business men will be met at the nation’s aerial doorstep by a veteran foreign service offi cer who speaks their language and understands their problems. If a general or admiral wants a shipload of anti-submarine guns, and in a hurry, he will be told how and where to go about obtaining them. If the visitor is a business man who wants to buy 20 locomotives so he can haul raw materials for the United Nations war effort, he will leave here with definite ap pointments with the proper offi cials. And if the visitor is a high-rank ing executive or diplomat arriving as a guest of the nation, he will be welcomed in the name of the President and State department. William C. Burdett, counsellor who has served in embassies in Peru, Brazil, Argentina and else where, will be in charge of the new office with the title of “repre sentative of the Department • •’ state and the Coordinator of Inter American affairs.” He is a native of Nashville, Tenn., and served as an infantry captain during the World War. Walter C. Rundle of the Coordi nator’s office assisted in establish ing the joint office. He pointed out the importance of the new service clue to the large number of offi cials and business men traveling the Trans-Caribbean airways which terminate in Miami. -V SHOT TO DEATH TEHERAN, IRAN.
