Long Motor Co. 1001 MARKET DIAL 3211 of maps and notes on our neighbor continent, to the south. Copywright: National Geographic Society Paraguay is perhaps the least known, to outsiders, of all the South American republics. It has the fewest number of inhabitants, and the smallest volume of foreign trade. Surrounded by Brazil, Ar gentina, and Bolivia, it is not only .andlocked. but its leading port is nearly a thousand miles from the sea. Yet Paraguay also is favored by nature in ways that give promise of future large - scale expansion and development. Although its pres ent population is only about 1,350, 000, over an area of some 170,000 square miles, it is estimated that this country is capable of support ing a score of more million peo ple. Its climate is mild yet varied, modified and made more healthful t>y the presence of low mountains and an extensive drain age system. It has considerable fertile soil. and. on the whole, plenty of rain. Its broad grass lands, deep rorests. and potential mineral supplies offer the geo graphic basis foi prosperous and balanced national economy. Frontier Region Opened Up. Physically, Paraguay is split ?i to two distinct regions. East of the broad Paraguay River, which forms an off-center dividing line through the county, lies Paraguay proper — a heavily forested, roll ing and hilly area which' holds most of the people and their com mercial resources. West of the river is the lately-won. sparsely settled Chaco. Paraguay's "wild west" frontier land, it is a region of low, grassy plains, swampy in spots, dotted by palms and scrub vegetation, and cut by sprawling, shifting, and annually - flooded rivers. In the developed east, the Paraguayans make their living chiefly by farming, lumbering, and stock raising. The livestock popu lation of this country is some four times the number of human in habitants. Exported cattle hides and canned meat provide a large share of the national income, with CLASSIFIED DISPLAY Quaker Sugared Schumacher Sugared Schumacher Feed helps you obtain the greatest profit and maximum health from live stock because it is a blend of nature’s four leading carbohy drate sources—oats, barley, wheat and corn. It is very uniform in composition, appearance, texture and analysis. It has proved itself to be a profitable feed in many herds and flocks, because car bohydrates are required wherever there is livestock to be fed. Sugared Sehumarher Feed is bet ter than corn, better than oats, better than barley, better than wheat feeds, because it is a blend of all four of them- it is bptter than all four of them combined because Sugared Schumacher carries in addition, special min erals and molasses. Thus it is an ideal earhohvdrate feed for the milking herd, the dry herd, for voting rrgnvy'VC stork, for breeding stock, for beef cattle, for horsps. »or sheen, for swine—since all these ani mals reonlre cenero-'s nuantitiee of carbohydrates. It serves all kinds of stock at all times of the year. Sugared Sch’.’macher Feed is a great utility feed for everv farm, and every type of stock. | J. J. ALLEN & SON Dock & Water Two Army Nurses Named 1942 ‘Woman Of Year* FORT DIX. N. J., Nov. 14.—'.T1— Two army nurses who were among the last to leave Corregidor before that Philippine. Island fortress fell to the Japanese will share the honor of being named 1942 "Wo man of the Year." They are Capt. Florence Mc Donald. now assistant superinten dent of nurses at the Fort Dix sta tion hospital, and Lieut. Helen L. Summers, now stationed at Mitch el Field. N. Y. The award will be presented to them in New York's Madison Square Garden next Thursday by Mrs. Wendell Willkie on behalf of, the Women's International Expo sition. additional trade items of cotton, sugar, and tobacco. Quebracho tan ning extract and oil of petitgrain ta perfume base from the leaves of a bitter orangel are specialty exports, as is also yerba mate, source of the pungent and popular ‘‘Paraguay tea.” Grown also in Argentina and Brazil, the s m a 1 1 yerba mate tree yields leaves which are roasted and powdered to make the tealike drink con sumed in South America in large quantities. A newcomer among Paraguayan shipments to the United States is tung oil. now one of the sourees of replacements for China's tung oil supplies. For their own home use the Paraguayans raise considerable corn, rice, beans, sweet potatoes, cananas. and manioc, a starchy, edible root that is the staff of life among the natives. Industry still plays an unimportant part in the Republic's wealth. So far there is little mining activity, although Paraguay is believed to possess varied mineral deposits, including iron, mercury, copper, and mag anese. In Paraguay, it has Deen said, “each town has its river: each house its brook.’’ Two mighty rivers, the Parana and the Para guay. provided flowing highways that rim the nation on the east and south, and across it north and south through its central reaches. On the Paraguay is situated the capital and chief port. Asuncion, with about one-tenth of the entire population of the country. Millions of dollars have been spent in port improvements at Asuncion in re cent years, including dredging the river’s channel, and providing stor age facilities and dock equipment. Fairly large vessels can navigate the Paraguay not only to the capaita 1-about 240 miles upstream from the mouth of the river—but 185 miles father north, to Con cepcion. For train service there is now a through line from Asuncion to Buenos Aires. With increasing interest in air transport. Paraguay also has several airports. The Paraguayans are an intense ly nationalistic people. Racially, the largest group is the result of the merging of Spanish and Gua rani-Indian blood. An important element among the many immi grant groups which have helped rebuild Paraguay’s population, losses are the Mennonites. Most of the members of this religious sect came from Canada, with a few others from western United States and Europe. Other foreign colonies include Get mans, Austrians, Czechs. Russians, Italians, and French. Spanish settlement was estab lished early in what is today Para guay. Asuncion was founded in 1537. as a way station on a hoped for short cut from the east to the wealth of Peru. Paraguay's dis content with certain phases of Spanish rule brought the first co lonial revolt against the motherland during the 1700's. Independence was won in 1811. war ummaira ropmation. A buffer nation by location, Paraguay long suffered from in ternational troubles. Between the years 1865 and 1870. it fought alone against the united forces of the neighboring countries, brazil. Ar gentina. and Uruguay. When the war was over Paraguay had lost hall her population, according to even conservative estimates. In addition, more than 50,000 square miles of territory were turned over to the victors. In recent history, another war, between Paraguay and Bolivia, was fought over the disputed ter ritory of the Chaco Boreal, a vast wilderness region of rich soil and forest land, with underlying petro leum wealth, which lies southeast of Bolivia and northwest of Para guay. The conflict Was finally set tled by arbitration in 1938. after an armistice period that followed actual warfare between 1932 and 1935. Bolivia was given the known oil-containing areas, while Para guay received the bulk of the ter ritory — some 92.000 square miles that increased the latter's size to more than that of California. ~CLASSIFIED DISPLAY 2 WEEKS OLD CHICKS Started Chirk* — Two weeks old. 15c each.
