The home agent wel comes visitors. -V japs’ Losses Greater Than Production Rate NEW YORK, Oct. 16—UP)—Losses inflicted on Japan by the forces of General MacArthur and Admir al Halsey “already are greater than her production capacity,’ Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., (R-Mass.) who recently returned from a tour of war theaters, said today. Addressing the Foreign Policy Association annual forum bfcre, he said that with the aid of Admiral Halsey, “General MacArthur has out the spreading tentacles of Japanese imperialism and has ac tually pushed them back,” and he added: “Just think what we will do to them when we give them both * barrels.” ___ MRS. Of Air Strength For Battle Of Schweinfurt STOCKHOLM, Oct. 16—UP)— The newspaper Aftontidningen quoted a German underground radio today as saying the Nazis massed 60 per cent of their total fighter strength Thursday in a futile effort to pre vent American bombers from reaching the critical ball bearing plant at Schweinfurt. The broadcast said the German secret service got five hours warn ing of the raid and that planes were called from hundred of fields in the Reich and France for massed defense along the path to the south central German target. Every type of fighting plane was said to have been sent against the Flying Fortresses and their Thun derbolt convoys. -V Japs Pressing Advance In Southwestern China CHUNGKING, Oct. 16—UP'—The Chinese continued to give ground today in severe fighting with a force of about 10.000 Japanese who are pressing a two-column offen sive along the Burma gateway in to southwestern China, a Chinese communique said tonight. Announcing for the first time the start of an offensive early in Oc tober to forestall a “Chinese drive to recpture Burma,” a Japanese imperial headquarters commmuni que broadcast from Berlin said Japanese were progressing from Tengyueh in Yunnan and Myitk yina in northern Burma. -V STORAGE PROBLEM PRESQUE ISLE, Me. NICHOLS ASSERTS CITY WATER SAFE Fresh Water Truck Will Visit Three Sections Of Community Today Whereas the city s salt-contam ing water supply probably doesn’t appeal to most Wilmingtonians. neither it is unfit to drink—unless the individual finds the taste nau seating, City Manager A. C. Ni chols said Saturday night. There have been several reports from various sections of the city that residents have been "fright ened” by the unusual taste, but city officials asserted that there absolutely is no cause for discern ment—beyond the category oi taste the water fell slightly yesterday— not enough, however, to vary the taste—but the cause of the decline in saline was not learned. A rise in the content of salt can be ex pected again, unless heavy rains fall in order to strengthen the Cape Fear river enough to push the salty tide out beyond the city’s intake pipes. More than a score of wells anc a circulating water tank have been made available for residents who desire fresh water to the ex tent that they are willing to “come and get it.” The water truck wil visit three sections of the city dur ing the day and will offer fresh water to the residents of the re spective areas. City Manager Nichols said tha' the truck would offer fresh watei to residents at Sixth and Nixor streets from 8 to 10 a. m. and 1 t( 3:30 p. m. It will stop at Lee Drive in Lake Forest from 10 t< 11 a. m. and from 4 to 4:30 p. m. and at Greenfield and 12th stree from 11 a. m. to 12 noon, and frorr 4:30 p. m. to 5.
