NAVY VOLUNTEERS MAY DELAY CALL - May Postpone Entrance In to Service Until First First Of Year Potential volunteers for the Navy in eastern North Carolina who desire to postpone their being called to active duty until after the first of the year should not hesi tate to file applications immediate ly, according to Jesse Helms, petty officer in charge of the Wil mington Navy Recruiting Station. Voluntary enlistments now are being accepted for three branches of the Navy, Helms said. They are the Navy Air Corps, for gener al service, and for the Waves. “Women sho desire to enlist in the Waves, but are waiting be cause they don't want to report for duty until January need have r.o fear of making application now. No woman in the Waves who is accepted this month will be called before January 7th,” Helms said. Seventeen-year-old boys who are High school graduates, or who are in their Senior year in school, now are acceptable for the Navy Air Corps, the recruiter said. Full in foimation and application papers may be obtained at the recruiting station, which is located on the second floor of the post office. There are also many good places open in general service for 17-year-olds. For this branch, it is not necessary that the youth b« a High school graduate. In this phase, volunteers are eligible for tiaining as aviation machinist mates, or in any one of 55 differ ent trades. Women in the Waves are des perately needed—both for officer and enlisted posts. Waves are trained at Humer college, in the heart of New York City, and re ceive the same rate of pay and privileges which are accorded men in the service. Age limits are 20 and 35, and the recruiter emphasized that no enlistments are being taken in any feminine brancn of the service at a lower age than 20. That was in contradiction to recent rumors that the Navy has lowered the en listment age of Waves to 18. With reference to the Navy Air Corps, the recruiter said that boys row in their senior year of High school should make application now. “They will not be called un til they have been graduated, and alter that, they will be given eight months of college before they be gin actual air corps training,” Helms said. Information about any branch of the Navy may be obtained at the recruiting station It is open every day in the week except Sunday. -V LONGER SHOPPING HOURS SCHEDULED Stores Will Start Remain ing Open Until 7 P. M. Beginning Friday Longer trading hours for the convenience of Wilmington Christ mas shoppers will begin Friday when stores start remaining open until 7 o’clock each night through December 24. John A. Sheehan, secretary of Retail Merchants association, said Wednesday that a check of local retailers disclosed that the big shopping ‘rush” is expected by merchandisers this week-end and on Monday. For the benefit of Sat urday shoppers the free wrapping center at the chamber of com merce office will remain open un til 7:30 p. m. Although retail stores will re main open an extra hour and one half this week-end and next week, it is asked of Wilmingtonians who can to continue to do their shop ping during the regular hours. The longer trading hours are schedul ed primarily for those who, prin cipally because of business reas ons, cannot do their buying at the usual hours. It is also urged that shoppers complete making purchases by 7 p. m. as government agencies have repeatedly impressed upon the store executives the need for con serving fuel and manpower. Long er store hourse mean use of more electric current, use of more fuel, and added strain on the already serious shortage of labor. Out swallow gives palliative relief. Beall, engineering vice president ot Boeing Aircraft company, reported today on his return from England “quite a feel ing of optimism’ among airmen over the prospect of the aerial of fensive softening up Germany for an early Allied victory. Germany’s losses of planes in the air battles over Europe now are much greater than her ability to replace them, ne said, and while the Nazis are working on new plane designs, including a Messer schmitt 209, "those won’t do them any good in this war.” While suggesting that the Ger mans rr.r v undertake more drastic defensive measures against the bombers, Beall said the rocket bomb equipment now in use has cut the speed of German fighter planes and made them “more sus ceptible than ever to the destruc tive gunfire of American daylight bombers and fighters.” “The rocket guns fired from fighter planes have been costing some American casualties,” he sa;d, “but they are by no means saving German cities from destruc tion.” Beall told a news conference that “pacing” of rocket-equipped German planes by American fight ers indicated the two rocket launching tubes hung under the wings, cut the plane’s speed 50 to 70 miles an hour. The continued use of the technique, he added, was indication that the Nazis were willing “to pay an extremely high cost in lives and machines in their effort to stop our attack.” Beall said the first one or two rocket attacks on formations of heavy bombers caused consider able damage, “principally because KIWANIANS HEAR CHRISTIAN ZIONIST The Rev. He directed his re marks chiefly against the British White Paper which, unless can celled in the meantime, will stop all immigration in Palestine next March. He made a strong appeal for a proper place for Jewry in the post-war world. Dr. W. H. Dosher introduced his guest Dr. Bill Mebane President C.
