FAMILY SQUABBLE
AIRED IN COURT
“Haven’t you learned in three
years of married life to keep your
mouth shut when your wife is talk
ing and let her run down?” So
licitor J. A. McNorton asked of
38-year-old Raymond Mayer, ship
yard worker of l-B-4 Hooper drive,
Maffitt Village, brought into Re
corder’s court yesterday on an
assault charge preferred by h i s
wife.
The Mayer household’s domestic
difficulties were thoroughly aired
before the court, and with the cou
ple’s infant children in attendance.
Mrs. Katie Mayer described how
her husband lunged at her violent
ly, and attempted to "choke” her.
Mrs. Mayer depicted her strap
ping, blond husband as a perpet
ually unpleasant member of the
home, and asserted that he “stay
ed out late.” ‘
On the other hand, Mayer said
that his home was in an uproar
all the time, that it was so noisy
he had to leave the house directly
when he came from work, usually
to "take in a picture.” Mayer re
vealed that he paid a nerve spe
cialist $400 last year to treat his
acutely nervous condition.
"There is just too much racket
at home,” Mayer said. Welfare
workers said the apartment was
very small for a four - member
family.
Mayer also reported that his sis
ter-in-law, Mrs. Lillie Belle Mayer
was "an agitator.” The sister-in
law lives in an adjoining apart
ment.
Judge H. Winfield Smith sus
I pended judgment in the case pend
ing an investigation by the Wel
fare department, and a hearing in
juvenile court to determine what
disposition rfiall be made of the
two children.
Meanwhile, Smith admonished
the wife to prepare meals for her
husband on time; told the man to
“stay at home at night”; and urg
ed both to maintain a respectable
residence.

5. S. SANTA ELISA
TO BE LAUNCHED
The S. S. Santa Elisa, fifth C-J
vessel to be built by the North
Carolina Shipbuilding company foi
the Grace Line, will be launched
Saturday morning at 10:30 o’clock
under the sponsorship of Mrs. C
C. Mallory, of New Rochelle, N
Y., wife of the treasurer and vice
president of the line.
Miss Jacquelin Mallory, of Wash
ington, a member of the U. S.
Marine Corps Women’s Reserve,
will be maid of honor.
The vessel is the 159th and the
33rd C-2 to near completion at the
yard. It is also the fourth in the
Grace line fleet to bear the name:
of Santa Elisa.
The original Santa Elisa, buill.
about 1902, was a freighter. The
second, a combination passenger
and freight ship built in 1918, was
subsequently sold to the Alaskan
Steamship company. The third
was a C-2 freighter lost in the
Mediterranean in a convoy en
route to Malta.
The new Santa Elisa follows the
standard C-2 design of the United,
States Maritime Commission con-'
sidered by experts to be the best
ship of its class in the world.
These ships are 459 feet overall,
of 13,900 tons displacement, with
a capacity for 88,000 cubic feet of
refrigerated cargo and are equip
ped with the most modern safety
appliances and devices for the
swift handling of cargo. Powered
by high pressure steam turbines
developing 6,000 horsepower, the
C-2’s are able to maintain a speed
of 15 1-2 knots in service and are
long-range vessels capable of mak
ing lengthy voyages without re
fueling.
