With The AEF , .
G.I. Protectors Of The Japanese
By KENNETH L. DIXON
WITH THE AEF IN ROME,
June 16.—(Delayed)-“This
whole diplomacy racket is high
ly unreasonable,” said Pfc.
Kenneth Kissinger of Toledo,
Ohio, speaking clearly and dis
tinctly to demonstrate the ter
rific diplomatic restraint un
der which he was operating.
“I joined the army to shoot
a couple of Japanese or maybe
three if my luck was good. And
what happens, I ask you, what
happens?”
Everybody in the command
car observed a moment of si
lence in deference to Kissing
er’s feelings. The motorcycle
escorted, heavily guarded pro
cession raced on through the
Roman street, the black car
ahead surrounded by military
policemen.
“I’ve got to guard one yet, a
Japanese—that is, two Japa
nese,” cried Kissinger in men
tal agony. “There they are in
that black car, not 20 feet
away, and I’m supposed to see
that nothing happens to them.’*
The MP lapsed into a mor
bid brooding silence and Lt.
Claude Bove of Schenectady,
who had listened to the tirade
with the- bored expression of
one who has heard this song
before, explained one of the
war’s most ironic situations.
The two toothy gents in the
black sedan were his excellen
cies Ken Harada, Japanese am
bassador to the Holyy See, and
his secretary, named Kanaya
ma. Until such time as they

to escort them to and from
work, guard them in the mean
time, and generally see to it
that no ambitious GI sent them
to join their most honorable an
cestors, thus adding a couple
of Nipponese notches to his Ml
stock.
At this point the long black
sedan stopped at the Vatican
gate and Lt. Bove walked up .
to see how long the Japanese
intended to stay inside. The
twin sets of shining teeth
smiled back at him aa they
answered his question.
They had been grinning all
the way through town, very
smugly secure and happy about
the whole thing. It was easy
to drift into Pfc. Kissinger’s
frame of mind.
The Japanese drove on
through the gate and the oth
er waiting MP’s took up the
lament.
“What a fix I’m in,’’ said
Staff Sgt. Leon M. Dunkin of
Dallas, Tex., pulling out a pic
ture of his baby son. “Some
day the kid is going to say
to me ‘Daddy, what did you
do in the war?’ Then I’ll
have to say ‘Well, son, I
guarded a Japanese. That’s
what I did during the war—
I guarded a Japanese so that
nothing would happen to him.”
He kicked moodily at the tire
of his motorcycle.
“The kid will probably throw
me out of the house,” he said. '
“Oh, well,” said Pfc. Elmer
Richan of Detroit, “the way I
look at it .s that there’s no
telling what they’ll tell you to
do next in this army, so why
get excited?’
“Yeah, that’s right,” agreed
Pfc. Heuston Reed, Joplin,
Mo. “maybe we’ll have to
guard Hitler before this war is
over. What the hell; if we
weren’t doing this we’d be
pounding a beat.”
Pfc. Bill Sweaks of Rockdale,
Tex., didn’t say a word. He
just stood there and listened.
But his faqe seemed to light
up a bit at the prospect of
guarding Hitler.
