Mrs. Frances Ulen, Washington, suffering an ankle injury and wear ing a pair of shoes taken from one of the men killed in the crash, hobbled across the mountainside to-summon aid. Wiley Vaught, a farmer, who found Mrs. Ulen as she stumbled down the mountain, revealed a grim story of the hours following the crash of the airliner, when, he said, she was unable to extri cate herself from the wreckage until a mortally wounded Marine cnlonpl died. The farmer said Mrs. Assist In Poll . : • 1 Two of the 66 Wilmington Girl’ Scouts, who assisted recently in a poll to obtain a cross-section es timate of the city's wToman-pow'er that probably would be available for the care of sick and wounded, either in a military or civilian capacity, are pictured above in terviewing a prospect. An officer of the U. S. Army recruiting sta tion, sponsor of the activities, looks on. The Scouts, stationed at strategic points in the city, inter viewed women as to age, educa tion. medical training and volun teer experience. The poll w'as con ducted to coordinate the efforts to recruit registered nurses for Army hospital, WAC-Medics for Army hospital duty, and volunteer nurs ing on a part-time basis in civilian hospitals. Shown, left to right, are Girl Scout Doris Gray, WAC Lieut. Helen Madden, a former Girl Scout who supervised the poll, an uniden* tified woman, and Girl Scout Elaine Warren. Prop Wash By MEARES HARRISS One of the fallacies, partially fos tered by the Army and Navy low age limit for pilots, is that after the first dash and vigor of youth has worn off, a man is no longer capable of safely piloting an air plane. The demands of the physi cal strength and endurance of service fliers are much greater than the non-scheduled private pi lot ever meets, necessitating young men of extremely high physical and mental calibre. The fact is that in civilian fly ing, judgment pays off as much, or more, than skill. Proof lies in the figures released by the Civil Aeronautics Authority on investi gation of nearly 5.000 non-schedul ed civilian aircraft accidents in 1941. This figure does not include airline accidents. Of this number, 4.700 were of a minor nature, involving only slight damage to the plane and no injury to pilot or passengers. In the 280 major accidents, there were only two fatalities, a truly remarkable tribute to the safety of private flying. The significant note in this in vestigation was the revelation that the pilots in the over 40 year age group had much better safety rec ords than younger men per thou sand hours flown, and the age group from 50 to 55 had the best record of all. The Hawthorne Flying service, which has more than a dozen non scheduled fixed base locations in North and South Carolila and Vir ginia, reports that the average age of plane owners at their airports is 37 years and in Rocky Mount, it is over 40. FIRST FLIGHT Major J. C. Pennington, former manager of the Pennington Flyir g Service, flew in recently in a C-4S Transport on a routine training flight for an overnight stay. While , here, he took his wife, the former ! Anna Feenstra, and their 1 1-2 year old son, Allan, for the young- j ster’s first flight in the Carolina Beach airport’s Taylorcraft. By coincidence, Captain George ; Carr, of Burgaw, also in the Air I Transport command and former instructor for the Pennington Fly ing Service, came in the same day 1^0—Legal COMMISSIONER’S SALE OF REAL ESTATE By virtue of the power and authority contained in a decree of sale made in a certain action pending in the Superior Court of New Hanover County, where'll New Hanover County, et al. are plain tiffs. and Dixie Land & Development Co. a corporation, G.
