WITH THE AEF
40 Months Across The Pacific
By SPENCER DAVIS
(Substituting for Kenneth L.
Dixon)
NEW YORK—UR—It takes little
more than a day and a half_ to
travel some 8,300 miles from Lu
zon’s war front to San Francisco’s
home front.
In 40 hours from west to east
you see the islands which Ameri
cans have fought and bled over
these past 39 or 40 months.
Perhaps in years to come air
travelers may dcze and but vague
ly remember the task forces, the
bombings, the assault troops and
the aviation engineers that made
this skyway to the Orient possible.
Right now it is impossible to for
get. The scars are too fresh.
You leave Luzon in a Mitchell
bomber carrying mail. Guns are
fully manned. An alert watch is
kept, although enemy aircraft, on
ly a few short weeks ago based
on the lush green island below,
are mostly gone now.
In less than three hours you are
at Tacloban airstrip, Leyte. The
wreckage of bombers and fighters
reminds that the fight there three
months ago was not easy nor with
Din post
The Red Cross canteen is crowd
ed with fliers just returned from
strikes over Japanese-held islands.
Mopping up missions don’t make
headlines but they are constantly in
progress.
From Leyte to Saipan you fly
1,400 miles in a new C-54 trans
port. The tired young lieutenant
next to you is Alfred Fernande
of San Antonio, Texas, who was
on Mindanao in 1941 and has been
fighting with the guerrillas ever
since.
He is going home to a 30-day
leave and about $15,000 back pay.
“If it was a million I wouldn’t
like to earn it over again that
way,” he says with a wan smile.
“The stories I could tell you. .
But he falls asleep and you don't
awaken him.
In a little more than seven hours
you are on Saipan. Long rows of

Magnificent runways, hangars
and administration buildings have
replaced the battlegrounds of less
than nine months ago.
An ATC traffic officer advises
you to "hitch” a ride on a Liber
ator to Guam. “You’U have a bet
ter chance to catch a through
plane to Pearl Harbor from
there.”
Also “hitching” is Brig. Gen.
Herman Feldman, Washington, D.
C., returning from a Leyte con
ference.
Intercommunication between
planners of the joint Army-Navy
staff of Admiral Nimitz with mem
bers of General MacArthur's staff
is not uncommon. General Feld
man is returning from such a mis
sion.
Forty-five minutes later, Guam
is another surprise. You know that
Admiral Nimitz has made it head
quarters. You also know that Jap
anese snipers occasionally make
themselves troublesome, but you
are hardly prepared to find six
lane highways and solidly built
new buildings.
General Feldman is moving on
to Pearl Harbor and invites you
to accompany him in a Naval Air
Transport service C54 flagship, as
different from the transport you
rode before as a Pullman is from
a freight car.
The four great engines, capable
of carrying six tons of cargo some
4,000 miles without setting down,
are muffled by sound proofing.
There is a rug. There are three
bunks, a table and private lavora
tory in one compartment and a
score of soft-backed chairs in an
other.
Flagships carry ranking officers
around the Pacific and are made
comfortable.
From Guam to Honolulu by way
of Kwajalein measures 4,130 sta
tute miles and takes 20 hours. Dur
ing the Kwajalein stop the base
commander tells you he has sev
en coconut palms which endured
the naval bombardment preceding
the invasion of this former Japa
nese possession a year ago. He
plans to divert one of the seven
trees for shade. The rest are or
namental, he says. Under the heat
of the Equatorial sun you wince
at this jibe. And again when the
says Kwajalein is so barren of
vegetation that even mosquitoes
and flies have abandoned it.
The last leg of your journey,
from Honolulu to San Francisco,
takes just 9 1-2 hours in a C-87—
a Liberator converted to a passen
ger plane. In 40 hours you have
traveled a streamlined sky road
it has taken more than three years
to build.

MOUNTAIN UNITS
COMPLETE TASK
ROME, Feb. 26.— (A*i—■'The Italian
front simmered down to an uneasy
quiet of endless partrolling, con
stant vigil and grim discomfort to
day as the 10th U. S. Mountain
Division completed its task ol
mopping up German positions
around Mt. Belvedere, west of the
Bologna-Pistoia highway.
Artillery kept up a ceaseless
pounding along the jagged battle
line running across Italy through
the peaks of the Apennines and
down into the valley of the Po
near the Adriatic.
There was some improvement in
American positions in the Belve
dere area.
Characteristic of the difficulties
faced by American troops in Italy
are those of the 805th U. S. Tanii
Destroyer Battalion, whose pres
ence in the Apennines was disclos
ed officially today.
Most of the 805th is so isolated
in the rugged mountain country
south of Bologna that its only com
munication with the outside world
is by field radio and pack mules,
which periodically hike above the
line where even jeeps must halt.

POLES NAME HEAD
OF ARMED FORCES
LONDON, Feb. 26.—<U.R)—Gen.
Wladyslaw Anders today was
named acting commander-in-chief
of all Polish armed forces con
trolled by the Polish government
in exile here and in an order of
the day he appealed to them to
fight on as “the expression and
token of the sovereignty of the Po
lish republic’’ in the country's
“darkest hour.”
Anders’ appointment and his or
der of the day were interpreted
in diplomatic quarters as a new
round in the fight for life of the
exile government of Premier To
mas Arcisewski, against a death
sentence voted by the Big Three
at the Crimea Conference.
The new move came one day
before a House of Commons for
eign debate in which Prime Min
ister Winston Churchill is expect
ed to outline Allied safeguards for
a free election in Poland.
The election would be called by
a Polish government, approved by
the Big Three, based on the Rus
sian-sponsored Lublin regime
which now is established in War
saw.
